Job Description

During individual and group settings, ASC Tutors work with students on learning and retaining content and material in their assigned subject areas. ASC Tutors utilize learning strategies during their sessions to help students understand their course material, offering supplemental support and encouraging student autonomy as necessary. ASC Tutors also facilitate class visits to increase student utilization of ASC services, facilitate events relevant to their subject areas, develop academic resources, and contribute to ASC strategic efforts to enhance student learning and access to educational support. ASC Tutors may also support students and faculty in the classroom, offering individualized attention to students, assisting with classroom activities, and offering supplemental group tutoring sessions outside the classroom to aid in student learning and content retention.


  • Conduct face-to-face, online, asynchronous, and/or drop-in tutoring sessions in assigned subject area(s) with students both individually and in groups, helping students develop their own best practices for becoming self-sufficient learners. Gather and report accurate data for each student, service effort, and/or tutoring session.
  • Attend and actively participate in all mandatory trainings and meetings, including orientation; onboarding; weekly meetings; online workshops; and/or other relevant trainings required for specific subjects or focus areas (e.g. group facilitation methods for those offering group sessions, research strategies for those offering research support, etc.)
  • Complete supplemental ASC activities, including ASC class visits, tutor reflections, observations, co-tutoring sessions, special projects, etc. as assigned by ASC professional staff.
  • Review and create academic resources available through the ASC, referring students to resource materials and/or staff members based on their individual needs and ability levels.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Director and/or ASC professional staff.


The physical demands include the ability to sit, stand, walk, bend, and lift up to 20 pounds occasionally.

  • A strong academic background ( minimum overall undergraduate GPA of 3.25)
  • Ability to communicate effectively to help students construct their own understandings of course/subject materials
  • Ability to listen to the needs of students and work cooperatively in setting realistic and productive learning goals
  • Sensitivity to the diverse socioeconomic, cultural, and academic backgrounds of ASC students
  • Dependability and personal accountability
  • Self-motivation, self-regulation, and a desire to mature and learn in a professionalteaching/learning environment


Ability to apply growth learning, self-regulated learning, scaffolding, metacognition,and similar learning strategies in tutoring practice.
