Job Description

Job Title: Artworker
Department: Art & Design
Contract: Permanent, full-time

Are you an imaginative and skilled creative seeking a dynamic role in the world of publishing? An exciting opportunity has arisen to join Pan Macmillan’s art team, where your technical expertise in preparing artwork for both print and digital mediums will be vital.

Your team:
The Art & Design department are a creative, collaborative, and vibrant team. We are responsible for creating cover designs across all genres, working closely with other departments from the initial brief to the final print-ready files. Our work involves sourcing and developing illustrations, photography, and original designs. We value new ideas and efficient processes, and we enjoy being at the heart of every book we publish.

Your role:
As an Artworker, you will report to the Studio Manager and be an integral part of our team. You will play a critical role by producing premium artwork, taking creative design concepts and turning them into final, technically perfect, print-ready files. You will collaborate closely with designers, editors, and production teams to ensure the visual elements align flawlessly with the overall project goals.

Your key responsibilities:

  • Produce quality artwork: Create, correct, and adjust high-quality artwork for print, ensuring technical and visual consistency across all adult imprints and select children’s imprints.

  • Technical collaboration: Resolve technical print issues by acting as a clear link between the Design and Production teams, including direct liaison with external printers to coordinate complex details like spot colours, foils, and embossing.

  • Cross-departmental teamwork: Collaborate closely with Editorial to provide artwork for review and approval, and coordinate with Production and Editorial on Critical Path timelines, proofing, corrections, and asset retrieval.

  • Support commercial teams: Supply Sales, Marketing, and Rights teams with necessary visual assets, sales materials, professional-grade mock-ups, highly finished visuals, and dummies for presentations.

  • Manage data: Handle data entry and reporting within the Biblio system to ensure accurate publishing information and support Critical Path control.

  • Improve how we work: Actively engage with new tools and workflows to improve team efficiency and innovation.

Essential experience, abilities and knowledge you’ll need to succeed:

  • Technical expertise: High proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator) with the ability to take a design seamlessly from concept to print-ready artwork.

  • Publishing or studio experience: Proven artwork experience within a book publishing environment, demonstrating a solid understanding of book design and print-production processes.

  • Attention to detail: A methodical approach to file management, proofing, and asset retrieval while managing multiple projects to meet tight deadlines.

  • Clear communication: Effective communication skills with the ability to build positive relationships across different internal teams (Design, Production, Editorial, and Sales).

  • Software skills: Comfortable working with workflow systems and tools, specifically Google Workspace and publishing management systems (ideally Biblio).

  • Inclusion and representation: An active dedication to promoting diverse voices and inclusive practices, taking personal responsibility for ensuring that our workplace and publishing reflect the communities we serve.

  • Community: A collaborative approach to building a supportive and vibrant environment.

  • Curiosity: A strong drive for learning and a readiness to embrace different perspectives and new digital tools.

  • Integrity: A foundation of openness and honesty, taking responsibility for actions and learning from mistakes.

Desirable skills we’d love you to have:

  • Advanced print processes: Prior experience directly liaising with external printers regarding complex finishes.

What you’ll get in return:
In return we can offer you a range of great projects, a supportive and collaborative working environment as well as a competitive salary and benefits package.

Salary: £33,000 – 40,000

Note on salary: The offered salary is dependent on experience and expertise. We benchmark our ranges to ensure fair, competitive compensation that grows with your impact.
