Art Teacher
May Center School, Randolph, MA
Year-Round Program
The Art Teacher develops and leads art education for students at the May Center School. In this role, you’ll work with students across the autism spectrum, including students who may have significant challenging behaviors. When needed, you’ll use Safety-Care-approved physical management procedures with respect and dignity, in accordance with May Institute policies and procedures
What You’ll Do
- Design and lead art classes for each classroom, coordinating the schedule with your supervisor.
- Guide classroom teachers in delivering art activities by providing instruction, materials, and ongoing support.
- Prepare instructional materials and maintain an inventory of art supplies, sharing inventory updates with your supervisor as needed.
- Collaborate with teachers and support staff to communicate individual students’ progress and needs.
- Build students’ skills and independence through structured teaching programs and applied behavior analysis (ABA) strategies.
- Implement teaching practices, behavior support plans, and emergency management procedures in accordance with each student’s IEP, behavior plan, and school policies.
- Collect behavioral data and maintain assigned written communication and documentation.
- Support student communication using methods appropriate to each student’s needs.
- Encourage participation through helpful, respectful interactions that recognize each student’s individual differences.
- Manage student groups and support more than one student at a time during art activities.
- Supervise students’ safety and well-being, assist with personal hygiene and self-care as needed, and ensure access to emergency medical attention when necessary.
- Protect student confidentiality and follow policies for student records and privacy.
- Assist in other classrooms when necessary and complete required training to maintain current skills.
What You Bring
- Education: Degree in Special Education, Art Education, or related field.
- Experience: Working with students with disabilities.
- Skills: Strong leadership, problem-solving, and ABA knowledge preferred
- Qualities: Empathy, patience, and a passion for making a difference.
- Collaboration: Ability to work closely with teachers and support staff to meet individual student needs.
- Communication: Strong verbal and written communication skills, including documenting and sharing student progress.
- Organization: Ability to plan art activities, prepare materials, and manage supplies.
- Adaptability: Ability to adjust instruction and support different learning and communication needs.
