General Statement of Job

The Art Gallery Associate is responsible for transport and installation of artwork at libraries across the district as well as drafting and editing marketing for exhibits and events. The position also assists with events and communicates regularly with various stakeholders to support the activities of the Library Art Gallery.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Functions:

  • Assists with the transportation and handling of artworks, which includes packing, unpacking, and ensuring that each artwork is transported without damage.
  • Responsible for preparing the gallery space, which can involve measuring, leveling, and sometimes minor carpentry to ensure the artwork will fit and be displayed correctly.
  • Determine the best approach to secure the art such as painting, sculpture and mixed media using a variety of tools and hardware to mount pieces safely, taking into consideration the weight, size, and fragility of the art.
  • Drafts and edits press releases, gallery brochures, advertisements and fliers.
  • Maintains the South Texas College Library Events website event postings and press releases.
  • Coordinates with custodial, facilities, and security personnel to maintain a clean and safe gallery environment.
  • Conducts recording for artist talks, edits videos with captions, and builds virtual tours.
  • Catalogs, inventories and maintains gallery collections and assists with workshops and artist talks throughout academic school year.
  • Maintains a working schedule of gallery exhibits and events.
  • Maintains the gallery mailing list, guest book and other patron-related materials, databases and spreadsheets.
  • Assists visiting artists in preparing biographical data and artist statements.
  • Conducts online research as needed.
  • Assists with local arrangements and preparations for art show and exhibit receptions, lectures, tours and associated events.
  • Assists with documentation for artists and artwork donations.
  • Assists staff with general clerical and office support tasks.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in related field required.
  • At least two (2) years of experience in art, art installation, and marketing preferred.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of computers and word processing.
  • Excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to read and interpret related documents.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Checks, Certificates, Licenses, and Registrations

  • Security Sensitive position: all applicants are subject to a criminal background check under South Texas College policy.
  • In addition, subject to a federal background check.

Physical Requirements

  • Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force to move objects.
  • Maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling while walking, standing or crouching on narrow, slippery, or erratically moving surfaces. The amount of balancing exceeds that needed for ordinary locomotion and maintenance of body equilibrium.
  • Moving about on hands and knees or hands and feet.
  • Perceiving attributes of objects, such as size, shape, temperature or texture by touching with skin, particularly that of fingertips.
  • Picking, pinching, typing, or otherwise working, primarily with fingers rather than with the whole hand as in handling.
  • Applying pressure to an object with the fingers and palm
  • Perceiving the nature of sounds at normal speaking levels with or without correction.
  • Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication, and to make the discrimination in sound.
  • Bending legs at knee to come to a rest on knee or knees.
  • Raising objects from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position-to-position. Occurs to a considerable degree and requires substantial use of upper extremities and back muscles.
  • Ability to make rational decisions through sound logic and deductive processes.
  • Using upper extremities to exert force in order to draw, haul or tug objects in a sustained motion.
  • Using upper extremities to press against something with steady force in order to thrust forward, downward or outward.
  • Substantial movements (motions) of the wrist, hands, and/or fingers.
  • Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word including the ability to convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately and concisely.
  • Standing particularly for sustained periods of time.
  • Bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist. Occurs to a considerable degree and requires full motion of the lower extremities and back muscles.
  • Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word including those activities in which they must convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately, loudly, or quickly.
  • Close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; and/or extensive reading, including color, depth perception, and field vision.
  • Visual acuity to determine the accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness of the work assigned or to make general observations of facilities or structures.
  • Have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: visual inspection involving small defects, small parts, operation of machines, using measurement devices; and/or assembly or fabrication parts at distances close to the eyes.
  • Mobility to accomplish tasks, particularly for long distances or moving from one work site to another.
