The Area Manager provides leadership, operational oversight, and financial accountability for power transmission and distribution projects throughout Henkels & McCoy's West Region. This position is responsible for managing a portfolio of utility construction projects, ensuring safe execution, exceptional customer service, operational excellence, and achievement of business objectives.

The Area Manager oversees field operations for overhead and underground electric utility construction, maintenance, emergency response, inspection, design support, and related infrastructure programs. This role serves as the primary operational leader for assigned territories, partnering closely with utility clients, project teams, labor organizations, subcontractors, and internal stakeholders to drive successful project delivery.

The Area Manager is accountable for safety performance, project execution, workforce planning, financial results, customer satisfaction, business development, and the overall growth of the assigned operating area.

This position requires regular travel throughout the assigned territory to support project teams, meet with customers, and ensure successful project execution.

Responsibilities

Safety Leadership

  • Champion Henkels & McCoy's safety culture and ensure compliance with all company, client, OSHA, and regulatory requirements.
  • Lead safety initiatives and promote a culture of accountability, hazard recognition, and continuous improvement.
  • Review and analyze safety performance metrics and implement corrective actions as necessary.
  • Ensure project teams maintain the highest standards of safe work practices.

Operational Oversight

  • Provide leadership and oversight for multiple transmission and distribution projects, including overhead and underground utility construction programs.
  • Ensure projects are executed safely, efficiently, on schedule, and within budget.
  • Develop resource allocation strategies to optimize workforce, equipment, and material utilization.
  • Monitor project performance, productivity, quality, schedule adherence, and client expectations.
  • Conduct regular field visits to assess project progress, identify risks, and support operational teams.

Financial and Business Management

  • Maintain full profit and loss responsibility for the assigned operating area.
  • Analyze project and operational performance to ensure profitability and achievement of financial objectives.
  • Review cost trends, productivity metrics, labor utilization, and forecasting data to identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Participate in budgeting, forecasting, and strategic planning activities.
  • Develop corrective action plans for underperforming projects and ensure timely implementation.

Client Relations and Business Development

  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with utility clients, including key stakeholders and decision-makers.
  • Act as the primary point of contact for operational issues, project performance reviews, and strategic discussions.
  • Support business development efforts by identifying opportunities for growth within existing and prospective accounts.
  • Collaborate with regional leadership and business development teams to pursue new contracts and expand market presence.
  • Participate in proposal development, contract reviews, pricing strategies, and customer presentations.

Leadership and Workforce Development

  • Lead, mentor, and develop Project Managers, Superintendents, General Foremen, and other operational personnel.
  • Conduct performance evaluations and provide ongoing coaching to support employee growth and succession planning.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, engagement, and continuous improvement.
  • Support recruitment, workforce planning, retention, and talent development initiatives.

Labor Relations and Workforce Management

  • Maintain productive working relationships with IBEW and other applicable labor organizations.
  • Support labor staffing strategies, workforce planning, and workforce availability across projects.
  • Assist with grievance resolution, labor discussions, and contract compliance matters as needed.
  • Ensure compliance with collective bargaining agreements and company employment practices.

Equipment and Resource Management

  • Oversee fleet and equipment utilization to maximize operational efficiency and return on investment.
  • Ensure proper maintenance, inspection, and deployment of equipment and tools.
  • Monitor procurement activities and support strategic purchasing decisions.
  • Coordinate resources across projects to meet operational demands and customer commitments.

Qualifications

  • 10+ years of progressive leadership experience in utility construction, power delivery, or related infrastructure industries.
  • Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Engineering, Business Administration, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated experience managing multiple utility construction projects and operational teams.
  • Strong knowledge of electric transmission and distribution systems, including overhead and underground construction.
  • Experience managing project financials, budgets, forecasting, and profit and loss responsibility.
  • Proven ability to lead large teams in a unionized environment.
  • Strong business acumen, strategic planning, and decision-making skills.
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and relationship management abilities.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to travel throughout the assigned region.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience supporting major utility clients such as San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E) or other investor-owned utilities.
  • Experience managing EPC, transmission, distribution, grid modernization, or utility infrastructure programs.
  • Leadership training and demonstrated success in developing high-performing teams.
