The South Carolina Department of Education is seeking a skilled and dependable Service Technician II to perform advanced diagnostic, repair, and preventive maintenance work on school buses and fleet vehicles. This position plays a key role in fleet readiness, field service response, and maintaining safe, compliant transportation services for students across South Carolina.
Each position is located at one of the ten (10) AREA III bus maintenance shops and does NOT float between shops. In the supplemental questions, please indicate your preferred shop assignments.
This position is located in the Office of Transportation/Pickens Bus Service Center.
Work experience involving the independent performance of job duties directly related to the area of employment.
Valid driver’s license at time of hire.
Ability to obtain and maintain a Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with Passenger, Air Brake, and Tanker endorsements within 120 days of employment.
Ability to pass required background checks, drug screenings, and USDOT medical examination.
Two (2) or more years of experience in automotive, diesel, or related mechanical repair.
Experience working with fleet, school bus, or commercial vehicle maintenance.
Familiarity with computerized diagnostics systems and electronic vehicle components.
Work is performed in shop, field, and outdoor environments with exposure to noise, weather conditions, oil, grease, fumes, and operational hazards. The position requires lifting, bending, kneeling, climbing, and prolonged standing. Adherence to all safety, environmental, and PPE requirements is mandatory.
SCDE Transportation values hands-on technical experience and supports employee growth through training, certifications, and internal advancement opportunities. Service Technicians may build specialized skills and progress into senior technician, lead, or supervisory roles within a stable statewide transportation operation.
