We are FIS. Our technology powers the world's economy and our teams bring innovation to life. We champion diversity to deliver the best products and solutions for our colleagues, clients and communities. If you're ready to start learning, growing and making an impact with a career in fintech, we'd like to know: Are you FIS?
About the role
As a Senior Architect in Professional Services, you will define and guide architecture for complex financial-services implementations. The role combines solution architecture, application architecture, technical leadership, and delivery governance across enterprise payment and transaction-processing platforms. You will work closely with product, engineering, client-facing, infrastructure, security, and operations teams to ensure solutions are scalable, secure, maintainable, and delivered right the first time.
The role also requires strong practical use of AI-assisted engineering. You will help teams use AI responsibly to improve architecture analysis, development, testing, documentation, code review, and delivery quality while maintaining security, privacy, and developer accountability.
What you will be doing
- Define, maintain, and communicate solution and application architecture for complex professional services engagements.
- Translate business, operational, regulatory, and non-functional requirements into practical architecture and technical designs.
- Guide development teams through design and implementation of enterprise Java applications, integrations, APIs, messaging flows, and database changes.
- Review functional and technical designs to identify risks, missing requirements, security concerns, performance issues, and opportunities for reuse.
- Establish and promote architecture principles, reusable patterns, coding standards, integration approaches, and delivery best practices.
- Provide technical leadership across distributed teams, including mentoring, design facilitation, decision support, and issue resolution.
- Shape integration architecture across REST APIs, XML/XSD message processing, event-driven messaging, batch processing, and external system interfaces.
- Support delivery practices across Maven-based builds, CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, regression readiness, release management, and production readiness.
- Work with infrastructure and operations stakeholders on containerized and cloud-ready deployments using technologies such as Docker, Kubernetes, Helm, and enterprise application runtimes.
- Drive responsible AI-assisted engineering practices, including use of AI for impact analysis, design options, code generation support, test generation, documentation, and review acceleration.
- Ensure AI-assisted outputs are reviewed, secure, compliant with organizational standards, and appropriate for client and production environments.
- Communicate architecture decisions clearly to technical and non-technical audiences, including delivery teams, product stakeholders, client-facing teams, and leadership.
What you will need
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and work experience.
- Extensive experience in enterprise software delivery, including several years in architecture, technical lead, or senior engineering roles.
- Strong background in financial-services technology, payment processing, transaction systems, or other high-availability, high-integrity enterprise platforms.
- Proficiency in Java, JEE/Jakarta EE concepts, EJB or comparable enterprise component models, XML, XSD, REST APIs, Maven, and multi-module application delivery.
- Experience with enterprise application servers or runtimes such as IBM Open Liberty, WebSphere Liberty, WebSphere, WebLogic, JBoss, or comparable platforms.
- Strong understanding of relational databases, Oracle or comparable database platforms, SQL, schema design, migrations, data integrity, and operational database considerations.
- Experience with message-oriented and event-driven architecture using IBM MQ, Kafka, JMS, or comparable messaging technologies.
- Practical knowledge of CI/CD and DevOps practices using Jenkins or comparable tools, including build pipelines, artifact management, release governance, and regression readiness.
- Experience with automated testing strategies, including unit, integration, end-to-end, business regression, and browser-based testing approaches.
- Familiarity with containerization and deployment technologies such as Docker, Kubernetes, Helm, K3s, or comparable cloud-native tooling.
- Understanding of authentication, authorization, secure coding, auditability, secrets handling, and enterprise security controls.
- Practical experience using AI coding assistants or AI-enabled engineering tools to improve architecture, development, testing, documentation, and review workflows.
- Ability to define guardrails for responsible AI usage, including validation of generated output, data protection, intellectual-property awareness, and compliance with organizational policies.
- Strong analytical, decision-making, problem-solving, communication, mentoring, teamwork, and time-management skills.
- Ability to influence architecture decisions, explain trade-offs, and guide teams toward pragmatic, maintainable solutions.
- Strong command of English, with the ability to communicate complex technical topics to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Payment-domain knowledge, ISO 20022, SWIFT-style messaging, real-time payments, cross-border payments, liquidity, sanctions, compliance, or reconciliation experience is an asset.
