The Archaeology Crew Chief is a temporary hourly adjunct staff position within the Department of Anthropology that supports the successful execution of summer archaeological field and laboratory operations. Working under the supervision of faculty project directors, the position provides leadership and operational support during active field investigations, including oversight of excavation procedures, documentation standards, artifact handling, and associated laboratory processing. The role requires prior archaeological field experience, the ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced research environment, and sufficient technical knowledge to assist in maintaining professional field and laboratory standards.
This position plays an important role in ensuring continuity between field excavation and post-excavation laboratory work, helping the department meet research timelines and project obligations during the summer field season. The position carries responsibility for assisting with day-to-day field coordination, supporting student and volunteer activities when applicable, and contributing to the accurate collection and processing of archaeological data and materials. This is a temporary, non-benefited hourly position and is not considered essential staff for purposes of university curtailment or emergency operations.
Duties/Responsibilities
Archaeological Fieldwork Operations (60%)
Assist faculty supervisors with the coordination and execution of daily archaeological excavation activities.
Support implementation of field methodologies, documentation standards, mapping, and artifact recovery procedures.
Provide day-to-day guidance and oversight to students, volunteers, or field crew participants as needed.
Help maintain field equipment, organize work areas, and ensure adherence to project safety and research protocols.
Contribute to accurate recording and management of archaeological data collected during field investigations.
Laboratory Processing and Collections Support (30%)
Assist with post-excavation laboratory work, including cleaning, cataloging, labeling, and organizing archaeological materials.
Support the preparation and maintenance of artifact records, inventories, and associated project documentation.
Help ensure proper handling, storage, and organization of collections and research materials.
Contribute to project wrap-up activities and completion of laboratory tasks following the conclusion of fieldwork.
Administrative and Project Support (10%)
Assist with general logistical and operational needs related to the archaeological project.
Support communication and coordination among project personnel, students, and faculty supervisors.
Help maintain organized project records and comply with university and project reporting requirements.
Perform related duties as assigned to support successful completion of the summer field season.
Requirements
Minimum Acceptable Education & Experience:
Bachelor’s degree in Anthropology, Archaeology, or a related field, or equivalent combination of education and relevant archaeological field experience.
Prior participation in archaeological fieldwork or field school experience required.
Experience with basic archaeological excavation, documentation, and laboratory procedures.
Required Licenses & Certifications:
Valid driver’s license or reliable transportation to and from fieldwork locations.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
Knowledge of standard archaeological field and laboratory methods and practices.
Ability to work effectively in outdoor field environments and under varying weather conditions.
Ability to follow detailed research, excavation, and documentation protocols.
Strong organizational and recordkeeping skills with attention to detail.
Ability to communicate effectively and work collaboratively with faculty, students, and project staff.
Ability to work independently with limited supervision while maintaining project standards.
Basic computer proficiency, including familiarity with spreadsheets, databases, and digital documentation tools.
Ability to safely handle archaeological materials, equipment, and field supplies.
Other Requirements:
Ability to perform physically demanding fieldwork, including walking on uneven terrain, standing for extended periods, lifting and carrying equipment or materials, and working outdoors in varying environmental conditions.
Availability to work a full-time schedule during the summer field season.
Preferred Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree completed by start date.
Previous experience serving in a supervisory or crew leadership role during archaeological fieldwork.
Experience with archaeological cataloging, collections management, or laboratory processing.
Familiarity with archaeological mapping, photography, or digital recording systems.
Demonstrated ability to mentor or assist students and volunteers in a field or laboratory setting.

Compensation Pay Range:
$ 15/hour
