At the Countryside YMCA, we’re more than a gym—we’re a community. As our Aquatic Lifeguard Coordinator, you’ll play a key leadership role in creating a safe, welcoming, and fun environment for every swimmer, member, and guest who walks onto the pool deck.
Under the direction of the Senior Program Director – Aquatics, this position leads our lifeguard team, ensures top-tier safety standards, and helps keep daily aquatic operations running smoothly.
What You’ll Do
- Lead, schedule, and support lifeguards and aquatic staff (YASAs), ensuring strong coverage and high safety standards
- Monitor the pool deck and proactively address safety concerns, hazards, and risk areas
- Respond quickly and confidently to emergencies, following YMCA protocols and the “Safe-in-Six” model
- Provide coaching and accountability to ensure staff are meeting expectations and delivering excellent member service
- Step in as needed to cover lifeguard shifts, breaks, or programming gaps
- Oversee opening/closing procedures and ensure aquatic areas are secure when not in use
- Maintain awareness of pool conditions, including chemical levels and equipment functionality; report issues promptly
- Help keep the pool and surrounding areas clean, safe, and inviting
- Build positive, respectful relationships with members, participants, and teammates
- Attend trainings, in-services, and team meetings to stay sharp and connected
QualificationsWhat You Bring
- At least 21 years old
- Current Lifeguard Certification (YMCA or American Red Cross)
- Lifeguard Instructor certification (preferred)
- 2+ years of leadership experience in aquatics (Head Lifeguard, Supervisor, or similar)
- Strong communication skills and confidence leading a team
- A high level of responsibility, professionalism, and sound judgment
- Willingness to enforce policies consistently and respectfully
- Reliability and strong attendance
What the Job Requires
- Ability to actively monitor swimmers and respond to visual and auditory cues
- Strong swimming skills and the ability to perform water rescues and first aid
- Physical ability to move quickly, lift up to 25 lbs, and assist with emergency extractions
- Comfort working in a humid, pool environment with varying noise levels
- Ability to problem-solve, stay alert, and handle high-pressure situations
