The Aquatics and Mechanical Systems Technician performs maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, and operation of aquatic and facility mechanical systems throughout the district. This position helps ensure safe, reliable, and high-quality facilities for patrons and staff by supporting the mechanical and chemical operation of year-round indoor pools, seasonal outdoor pools, splash pads, and other district building systems. This position works with a variety of equipment, including pumps, motors, plumbing, filtration systems, chemical controllers and feeders, boilers, UV systems, variable frequency drives (VFDs), and related mechanical equipment. The position also assists with HVAC, building mechanical systems, and general facility maintenance as assigned.

We recognize that great technicians come from many different backgrounds. Previous pool maintenance experience is helpful, but it is not required for the right candidate. We are willing to provide on-the-job training to an individual who demonstrates mechanical aptitude, a commitment to safety, dependability, and a desire to learn. Essential Duties

• Performs daily mechanical and chemical operation and maintenance of district aquatic facilities, including indoor and outdoor pools and splash pads.
• Inspects, monitors, troubleshoots, maintains, and repairs aquatic and facility equipment, including pumps, motors, plumbing, chemical feeders and controllers, filtration systems, boilers, electrical equipment, UV systems, VFDs, valves, and related mechanical systems.
• Learns and applies appropriate procedures for pool water chemistry, chemical testing, chemical handling, water treatment, and aquatic mechanical systems.
• Conducts routine facility and equipment inspections to identify safety concerns, maintenance needs, equipment malfunctions, and potential problems before failures occur.
• Diagnoses equipment and system problems and performs routine and emergency repairs within the employee's training and qualifications. Coordinates with supervisors, other district staff, or outside contractors when necessary.
• Assists with HVAC, plumbing, mechanical, and general building maintenance throughout district facilities as assigned.
• Responds to and completes maintenance requests through the district’s work order system.
• Assists with preseason preparation, seasonal operation, shutdown, and winterization of outdoor pools and splash pads.
• Maintains equipment and mechanical spaces in a clean, safe, and orderly condition.
• Assists with ordering, receiving, distributing, and maintaining inventories of chemicals, parts, equipment, tools, and maintenance supplies.
• Maintains accurate records of pool chemistry, equipment inspections, preventative maintenance, repairs, work orders, and other required activities.
• Follows established procedures for chemical handling, hazardous materials, personal protective equipment, lockout/tagout, and other applicable workplace safety practices.
• As knowledge and experience are developed, assists with training aquatic staff in routine mechanical operations, chemical monitoring and handling, equipment operation, and safety procedures.
• Assists with identifying equipment replacement, preventative maintenance, repair, and capital improvement needs.
• Drives district vehicles to facilities, work locations, and approved events.
• Assists other district Services teams with facility operations and maintenance needs, including snow removal, as assigned.

Other Duties

• Attends district, aquatics, maintenance, safety, and other meetings as required.
• Participates in job-related training and professional development opportunities to build knowledge of aquatic, mechanical, HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and facility systems.
• Responds to facility emergencies and assists staff with resolving mechanical, operational, and safety concerns.
• Works cooperatively with Aquatics, District Services, Parks and Grounds, and other departments to maintain safe and reliable facilities.
• Researches and recommends maintenance parts, equipment, tools, and operating supplies as appropriate.
• Provides professional and courteous service when interacting with employees, patrons, contractors, vendors, and members of the public.
• May assist with special projects, renovations, equipment installations, or other facility maintenance projects.

Supervisory Duties:

• May be responsible for supervising part-time employees.
• Depending on operational needs, the position may provide work direction or technical guidance to part-time, seasonal, or aquatic staff assisting with pool preparation, routine maintenance, or mechanical operations.
• As knowledge and experience are gained, the position may assist with training staff in mechanical and chemical operations, hazardous materials, safety, and risk management procedures.

Examples of duties

The successful candidate does not need to possess all technical competencies listed below at the time of hire. Some skills may be developed through district-provided training, hands-on experience, certification programs, and mentoring.

• Mechanical aptitude and interest in learning how pumps, motors, plumbing, filtration, HVAC, electrical, chemical treatment, and other mechanical systems operate.
• Ability to safely use or learn to use hand tools, power tools, testing equipment, pool maintenance equipment, pressure washers, and related maintenance equipment.
• Ability to learn aquatic mechanical systems, including pumps and piping, filtration, boilers, chemical controllers and feeders, UV systems, VFDs, valves, and related equipment.
• Ability to learn water chemistry principles, chemical testing, chemical handling, and applicable aquatic facility regulations and safety requirements.
• Ability to troubleshoot problems, identify possible causes, and develop practical solutions.
• Ability and willingness to learn new equipment, technology, processes, and maintenance techniques.
• Ability to follow written and verbal instructions, technical manuals, safety procedures, and established operating procedures.
• Ability to work independently after appropriate training while recognizing when assistance or additional technical expertise is needed.
• Basic computer and technology skills and ability to learn district software, electronic work order systems, and recordkeeping applications.
• Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, contractors, vendors, patrons, and the public.
• Ability to remain calm, exercise sound judgment, and respond appropriately during equipment failures, facility emergencies, and other stressful situations.
• Strong commitment to workplace safety and proper use of personal protective equipment.
• Ability to work a flexible schedule when needed, including occasional evenings, weekends, holidays, or emergency response.
• Possess and maintain a valid Colorado driver's license with a satisfactory driving record.

Qualifications

Required:

• High school diploma or GED.
• Valid Colorado driver's license with a satisfactory driving record.
• Basic mechanical aptitude and demonstrated ability or interest in working with mechanical equipment, tools, maintenance, or repair.
• CPR, First Aid, and AED certification, or ability to obtain certification within 90 days of hire.
• Certified Pool Operator (CPO) or NRPA Aquatic Facility Operator (AFO) certification, or ability to obtain the required certification within six months of hire.

Preferred, but not required:

• Previous experience in aquatic facility maintenance, facilities maintenance, HVAC, plumbing, electrical, mechanical repair, automotive repair, construction, industrial maintenance, building operations, or a related skilled trade.
• Experience troubleshooting pumps, motors, plumbing, boilers, electrical components, HVAC, or other mechanical equipment.
• Previous experience working with pool systems or water chemistry.

Supplemental information

• Work is performed in indoor and outdoor environments and requires travel between district facilities in varying weather and temperature conditions.
• The employee regularly works in aquatic and mechanical environments and may be exposed to heat, cold, wet, or humid conditions, noise, vibration, fumes, odors, chemicals, dust, and mechanical or electrical hazards.
• The position requires appropriate use of personal protective equipment and adherence to established chemical, equipment, and workplace safety procedures.

Physical Activities:

• The position requires sitting, standing, walking, reaching, bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, climbing, and balancing. The employee frequently uses hands and fingers to handle tools, equipment, controls, and other objects.
• The employee must be able to carry, pull, push, or lift up to 100 pounds unassisted and up to 300 pounds with assistance or appropriate equipment.
• The position also requires alertness, precision, concentration, judgment, reasoning, patience, mechanical problem-solving, and the ability to safely respond to changing conditions and equipment issues.

Travel:

• Regular travel is required between district facilities. The employee may occasionally be required to attend meetings, training, or other work-related activities outside of the district.
