Job Description

General Summary (What is done and why.)

This position is primarily responsible for serving the needs of Green Mountain Power customers with a variety of meter services including monitoring and reporting meter conditions. Will be trained to install, remove and exchange self contained meters and metering equipment in the field. Must be able to test and repair self contained and transformer rated meters and equipment in the shop. Responsible for testing and repairing recording devices used for power quality monitoring. Work is varied in nature and will require travel outside of the assigned "home" base district to assist in other districts. Must follow Company safety standards and practices and be compliant in the proper use of personal protective equipment required to perform work. Incumbent applies working knowledge of basic electricity principles and technologies to work performed. Works under limited supervision and in compliance with established policies, procedures and regulations.

Essential Functions (Majority of duties, but not meant to be all-inclusive nor prevent other duties from being assigned as necessary.)

  • Identifies by inspection or test the correct connections of self-contained meters, test blocks and connection devices. Will be trained in all electric metering circuits in common use to insure correct metering.
  • Tests and repairs self contained and transformer rated meters and equipment in the shop. Will be required to become familiar with the characteristics, construction, adjustments, constants and application of meters and know how to adjust for power factor and balance the elements of all types of meters.
  • Will be trained to install, remove, seal, unseal and inspect self contained electric meters and associated equipment on site.
  • Receives physical shipment of all metering equipment and processes associated paperwork.
  • Builds and wires primary and secondary metering packages in the shop under supervision.
  • Evaluates and tests primary and secondary PTs and CTs in the shop under supervision.
  • Uses testing and troubleshooting devices in the field to troubleshoot meter and communication issues and perform customer requested meter tests.
  • Originates investigation of energy diversion, potential safety hazards and other abnormal meter conditions (e.g., broken seals, tampering, malfunctions, and incorrect meter #or meter multiplier).
  • Effectively operates various computer software systems and navigates all applications routinely used in Meter Operations.
  • Acts as back up for manual meter reading.
  • Travels to other Company locations to assist as needed.
  • Must be able to work as part of a team to train Meter Operations personnel of lower classification.
  • Completes functions such as prioritizing and completing work within the time frames established.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (Minimum education, experience, technical and communication skill levels and licenses/certificates normally required to perform the duties of this position.)

  • Advanced math skills
  • A sound knowledge of electricity as it applies to both single and poly phase metering required through a technical degree or equivalent experience.
  • Must have the ability to progress to Meter Technician 3nd class within 6 months of start date in the position
  • Basic PC skills.
  • Moderate oral and interpersonal skills with ability to communicate with customers in a clear and courteous manner.
  • Will be Company certified to operate the forklift as required to move and receive metering equipment.
  • Valid Vermont drivers license with a driving record adequate for insurability.

Working Conditions (Typical working conditions associated with this type of work and environmental hazards, if any that may be encountered in performing the duties of this position.)

Internal - Work is performed, on a limited basis, in climate controlled office environment, where exposure to conditions of extreme heat/cold, poor ventilation, fumes and gases is very limited. Noise level is moderate and includes sounds of normal office equipment (computers, telephones, etc.). Length of day is unpredictable; long hours may be required to accommodate peak periods, customer availability and staffing emergencies.

External - Work is performed extensively where there is exposure to outside atmospheric conditions or heat/cold or moisture, over all types of terrain and exposure to traffic while performing meter functions. Work involves potential exposure to hazardous conditions (e.g., energized meter sockets, aggressive dogs, disgruntled customers, poisonous plants, etc.).

Special - Occasionally work requires scheduled and unscheduled overtime and incumbent will be expected to participate in and have an active role during storm restoration.

Physical Demands (The physical effort generally associated with this position.)

Work involves standing and walking for extended periods of time; some duties are performed from a seated position. Work routinely includes pushing, pulling, or carrying objects weighing up to 20 pounds, and occasionally up to 50 pounds, such as meters, tools and test equipment. Deadlines, disgruntled customers, workloads during peak periods and pressure to achieve goals may cause increased stress levels. Work normally requires finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination to operate hand-held device and computer keyboard.

Working Relationships/Contacts (Positions, other than supervisor and immediate co-workers, with which incumbent has frequent contact and the reason for contact.)

Internal - Contact with customer service, T & D Ops and Scheduling. Occasional contact with vehicle maintenance to schedule vehicle maintenance and repairs. Contact with district offices to address specific internal customer concerns or requests.

External - Frequent contact with customers to obtain or provide information needed to perform the duties of the position.
