As an Apprentice Powerline Technician, you will work alongside experienced Journeypersons to construct, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair overhead and underground electrical distribution systems. You will support field crews in ensuring all work is completed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with utility standards, electrical codes, and project requirements.
Key Responsibilities
Assist with the construction, installation, and maintenance of overhead and underground powerlines
Set poles, anchors, and hardware; install crossarms, insulators, and related line equipment
Pull, splice, terminate, and test primary and secondary cables
Support crews in energizing and de‑energizing lines following proper switching procedures
Install and maintain transformers, switches, cut‑outs, fuses, and other distribution equipment
Read and interpret line diagrams, construction drawings, and utility standards
Operate and assist with bucket trucks, digger derricks, and other line equipment under supervision
Perform grounding, rigging, and handline operations safely and correctly
Assist in troubleshooting outages, identifying faults, and performing repairs
Maintain tools, equipment, and materials in a safe and organized manner
Follow all safety protocols, including PPE requirements, job briefings, and hazard assessments
Support the crew in planning daily tasks and ensuring work areas are safe and compliant
Work in various weather conditions, at heights, and in physically demanding environments
Required Knowledge and Experience
Journeyman Power Lineman Apprenticeship and Trade Certificate
Minimum 2 years utility experience constructing, installing and maintaining overhead, underground, transmission, and distribution systems
Thorough knowledge of Provincial Electrical Utilities Regulations and provincial specific Occupational Health and Safety Act, Regulations, and Codes
Strong mechanical aptitude, physical strength, and manual dexterity
Comfortable working at heights, in bucket trucks, and in challenging outdoor conditions
Ability to lift, climb, crouch, kneel, and perform physically demanding tasks for extended periods
Understanding of electrical safety, lockout/tagout, and utility worksite procedures
Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, line maps, and measurements
Strong communication skills and ability to work effectively in a crew environment
Willingness to work in remote locations, during storms, and on emergency restoration when required
Ability to distinguish color‑coded wiring and follow precise instructions
A valid driver’s license (DZ or willingness to obtain is an asset)
Salary range: The expected salary for this position is $26.00 -$41.00 per hour
Individual pay is determined based on several factors such as work location, education, experience and unique skills.
