Main Purpose and Function
The Fleet & Manufacturing Services Branch supports the City of Vancouver in being a service provider in all aspects of Fleet Management. The expertise and knowledge provided to internal and sometimes external clients by the Equipment Services Branch includes: Engineering, Vehicle Procurement, Heavy Duty/Commercial/Automotive Maintenance and Repair, Quick Service Repairs, Machining, Mill Work, Fabrication, Vehicle Outfitting, Carpentry, Body Shop Vehicle Repair and Painting, Product Inventory/Ordering, and Small Equipment Repair.
Fleet & Manufacturing Services (FMS) has four locations and operates over two shifts. The successful candidate will be required to work both Day shifts (6.30am to 3.00pm) and Afternoon shifts (3.10pm to 12.34am) Monday to Friday on a regular rotation to gain the experience required to complete apprenticeship. The successful candidate may also be required to adjust shifts and change shop locations as operationally required.
The successful candidate will also be required to attend school as stipulated by the Skilled Trades BC to complete your apprenticeship. The specific dates for schooling are discussed and approved by the employer and scheduled by the employee and you will receive your hourly rate (part from Employment Insurance and part from the City of Vancouver) whilst attending school.
Specific Duties/Responsibilities
As an Apprentice Fabricator, you will work with members of the Fleet & Manufacturing Services team to support the City of Vancouver fleet including but not limited to Vancouver Police and Fire consisting of approximately 4,000 units. The fleet ranges from small equipment, automobiles, light and heavy trucks along with heavy equipment and many specialized items of municipal equipment and projects.
Your role will be to help support the branch on fleet related pm’s, repairs & outfitting when required. You will also be helping complete other specialty work outside of fleet such as renovations, street activity projects and other fabrication related assignments with your team. You will be expected to work along with colleagues from Garage and Shops Operations including Journeyperson Mechanics, Fabricators, Machinists, Body Workers, Carpenters and Operations Workers.
You will perform all of the duties of a Journeyperson Fabricator in order to gain the necessary skills and experience to complete your apprenticeship. This will include detailed work assignments and instructions, both verbal and written via Tradespersons, Foremen, Supervisors and Managers.
Your assignments will be checked and monitored whilst in progress and on completion to ensure successful progress towards the required standards, skill levels, knowledge and competencies to successfully complete your apprenticeship and become a Red Seal Journeyperson Fabricator.
This position will perform other duties as required.
