Apprentice, Level 4 Manufacturing Engineering Technician

Join us where we are enabling the digital world to realise its incredible potential, and where we will support you to realise yours too.

Our technology powers EVERYTHING with a digital component: we produce innovative equipment that enables the world’s biggest names in electronics to bring their technology to market. We thrive in a forward-thinking environment where continuous investment powers opportunities to work on exciting new projects on a global scale.

And while we have offices – and career opportunities - around the world, the real magic happens at our Product Innovation Centre in Weymouth. This is the centre of our High End Printing business, where our engineers design, build and refine high-speed, high-precision printers to offer the best-in-class solutions to our customers.

Our People enjoy challenge and opportunity in equal measure. We sharpen our skills and knowledge, and experiment at the cutting edge across multiple disciplines.

We think you will like it too.

The role:

We are looking for someone who is motivated to start a career in engineering and keen to learn within a manufacturing and production environment. Our Apprenticeship opportunities combine studying for a professional qualification with gaining work experience at our site in Weymouth. You become part of the team when your professional career begins, from Day 1.

This is a Level 4 Manufacturing Engineering Technician apprenticeship designed for individuals who have completed college, A‑levels, or an equivalent Level 3 qualification and are ready to move into a technical, hands‑on engineering role.

Manufacturing Engineering Technicians play a key role in how products are built, focusing on process definition, documentation, efficiency, quality, and continuous improvement. This is not a design engineering role and not a general operative role; it sits between production and engineering and involves working across the full manufacturing lifecycle. This role requires an interest in practical engineering, manufacturing processes, and continuous improvement. It is not suitable for candidates looking for a purely academic route, a product design or Research and Development focused role or an entry-level role straight from GCSEs.

In this role, you will work closely with experienced Manufacturing Engineers and Production teams to support how ASMPT products are manufactured safely, efficiently, and to the required quality standards.

You will be involved in a wide range of technical activities, including:

  • Supporting the definition, review, and update of manufacturing and build documentation, including production work instructions and technical specifications
  • Assisting with the investigation and resolution of manufacturing and build issues using structured problem-solving approaches (e.g. root cause analysis, containment, corrective actions)
  • Learning and supporting the ASMPT printer machine build process, while gaining exposure to related functions across the business
  • Supporting continuous improvement activities to improve safety, quality, cost, delivery, and efficiency
  • Assisting with the design, implementation, and improvement of jigs, fixtures, and tooling to ensure repeatable and consistent manufacture
  • Working with internal and external stakeholders such as production operatives, quality teams, suppliers, auditors, and customers
  • Ensuring engineering activity is carried out in line with approved processes, company procedures, and health & safety requirements, including supporting safe systems of work and risk assessments

As part of the apprenticeship, you will study towards a Level 4 Engineering Manufacturing Technician qualification.

Academic Requirements:

  • 5 GCSEs at grade 4/5 or above, including Maths, English, and a science, technology, or engineering‑related subject, OR
  • 90+ credits in a Level 3 Engineering BTEC

About the qualification:

During your apprenticeship, you will be visited by the training provider at least once a month for a full day of training. In some months, you may receive two visits to support the development of your knowledge, skills and behaviours.

All training is delivered at on site at ASMPT, meaning you will not need to leave the workplace to attend college. This workplace-based approach allows the trainer to tailor learning directly to your role, using familiar language and real working examples so you can easily relate the learning to your day-to-day tasks. This is a popular and effective way of learning, as training is personalised to your workplace and delivered in small groups or one-to-one.

The training provider operates all year round and does not break for half term, helping you make consistent progress and potentially complete your apprenticeship on time or even earlier than planned. The typical duration of the Level 4 Manufacturing Engineering Technician Apprenticeship is around 42 months. https://skillsengland.education.gov.uk/apprenticeships/st0841-v1-4

You will also be set up on an online portfolio, where you can view assigned tasks, track your progress, and see what needs to be completed before your next session. If you need any help between visits, you can contact your tutor for additional support at any time.

About you:

We are looking for someone who:

  • Has completed Level 3 study (e.g. A‑levels, Engineering BTEC, or equivalent) and is looking to progress into a higher‑level technical role
  • Has an appreciation of different engineering disciplines, such as mechanical, electrical, or software engineering
  • Has an understanding or motivation to learn what Manufacturing Engineering does – to support production through process definition, documentation, problem‑solving and improvement
  • Is comfortable working with technical information, instructions and data
  • Enjoys understanding how things are built and how they can be improved, rather than purely designing new products
  • Is organised and able to manage your own workload to meet short‑, medium‑, and long‑term objectives
  • Is willing to listen, ask questions, and learn from experienced engineers and technicians
  • Has a positive attitude to problem-solving and continuous improvement
  • Has a willingness to learn about the importance of quality, safety, and following procedures in an engineering environment

We think you will enjoy working at ASMPT because:

Our culture is unique. Unlike many of our more corporate competitors, we strive to maintain a people-first, family-like culture that people appreciate and enjoy. It’s conducive to collaboration, to encouraging feedback and enabling innovation. It’s an exciting place to be. The possibilities here are limitless, the opportunities are huge, and our culture is warm and friendly.

Few organisations can rival our complete package of exciting, leading-edge work in an exceptional location that offers a fantastic quality of life.

  • The opportunity to gain hands-on experience whilst earning, as well as the company paying for your studies
  • Mental Health and Wellbeing support – we have a team of mental health first aiders within ASMPT and a confidential, external provider
  • Annual leave starting at 25 days
  • Discounted corporate gym membership
  • Subsidised canteen providing local, fresh, nutritious sustenance
  • Company social events – including company gatherings, sports and social club activities, environmental/diversity group activities, football, volleyball, badminton, organised walks etc.
