The Apprentice is responsible for constructing and maintaining buildings. Required knowledge includes: construction and remodeling trades, practices, procedures, techniques, tools and equipment, materials, specifications, quality control, cost control and safety. Know the characteristics and proper use of all building construction materials.

  • Be proficient in the operation, safe use, and maintenance of hand and power tools.

  • Lay foundations, read drawings, and calculate quantities of materials.

  • Assemble and fasten materials to make framework or props, using hand tools and wood screws, nails, dowel pins, or glue.

  • Set up scaffolding as needed and build stairs and other items.

  • Construct and maintain structural woodwork, shelving, flooring, tables, chairs, etc.

  • Perform renovations as required and ensure an adequate supply of materials for preventative maintenance.

  • Keep a daily log of tasks and prepare a preventative maintenance schedule.

  • Assist with the delivery of other related municipal services and respond to the superintendent's direction.

  • Contribute to and participate in the effective use of the quality-control system.

  • Perform other related duties that may be assigned, including minor duties of other trades where certification is not required, and the work does not exceed own limitations.

Qualifications

  • Currently indentured into an Apprenticeship Program, Carpenter.
  • Two or more years of experience as a carpenter
  • Currently working in the trade
  • Motivated, Hardworking, able to work long hours and Saturdays if needed
  • Knowledge of carpentry and building maintenance
  • Knowledge of safe operation of basic hand and power tools
  • Knowledge of workplace safety, and safe lifting and handling procedures
  • Mathematical and analytical skills necessary to do material and labour estimates
  • CSTS training is a prerequisite for employment. If you do not have this training, it can be made available.
