Job Description

About Brompton

We make bikes that move differently. For more than 50 years, we've combined engineering, craft and curiosity to create products that help people move through their cities in a different way. We're proud of what we make, ambitious about what's next, and believe the best ideas come from people who care, collaborate and challenge the status quo.

At Brompton, you'll be part of a community that values creativity, continuous improvement and making a meaningful impact.

About the Role

This is an exciting opportunity to start your career as a qualified bike mechanic while learning at the home of Brompton in Greenford. Working alongside experienced colleagues in a professional workshop, you will build the practical knowledge, technical skills and behaviours needed to inspect, service, repair and prepare bicycles to a consistently high standard.

Alongside your day-to-day role, you will complete the Level 2 Bicycle Mechanic Apprenticeship (ST0622). Your formal apprenticeship training is included and combines workplace learning, online study, coaching and two short block-release technical courses. The programme normally lasts 18 months, followed by up to three months for the End Point Assessment. Successful completion leads to industry-recognised Cytech training and accreditation.

You do not need to be an experienced mechanic. We are looking for someone who is curious, practical and keen to learn, with a genuine interest in bikes, quality and how things work.

Key Responsibilities

Learning the Craft

  • Work alongside experienced bike mechanics to build confidence in bicycle inspection, servicing, repair and maintenance.
  • Learn to diagnose faults accurately and complete work using the correct tools, methods and technical information.
  • Develop practical capability across complete bike servicing, wheel building and bike preparation.
  • Build a strong understanding of Brompton products, components and quality standards.
  • Ask questions, seek feedback and apply learning to improve the quality and efficiency of your work.

Workshop Delivery

  • Support the safe and efficient flow of work through the workshop, completing assigned tasks carefully and on time.
  • Check your work thoroughly and raise any concerns, faults or quality issues with your manager or mentor.
  • Use, maintain and store tools and equipment correctly, keeping work areas clean, organised and safe.
  • Follow all health and safety, workshop and quality procedures, including the correct handling of bicycles, parts and materials.
  • Maintain accurate job, service and training records as required.
  • Treat every bicycle with care and contribute to a positive, supportive and high-performing team environment.

Customer & Product Experience

  • Learn how to explain completed work clearly and provide a professional bike handover.
  • Build confidence communicating with colleagues and, where relevant, customers about repairs, maintenance and bike care.
  • Represent Brompton's commitment to quality, craftsmanship and a brilliant customer experience in every task.

Your Apprenticeship

  • Take an active role in all elements of the apprenticeship, including workplace coaching, online learning, coursework, practical assessments and technical training.
  • Complete a minimum of six hours of off-the-job training each week during the 18-month programme, supported within your working hours.
  • Attend the two required block-release Cytech courses at one of the training provider's workshops.
  • Work towards Cytech Technical Two and Cytech Technical Three as part of the apprenticeship.
  • Keep your learning portfolio and evidence up to date, and prepare for the independent End Point Assessment.
  • Successfully complete the End Point Assessment, which includes an observed full bike service, an observed wheel build, a customer service and bike handover role play, and an interview based on portfolio evidence and coursework.

Skills

  • Practical Learning - Enjoys hands-on work and can apply instructions, demonstrations and feedback to build new skills.
  • Quality & Attention to Detail - Works carefully, checks their work and takes pride in getting the details right.
  • Problem Solving - Approaches faults logically, stays curious and is willing to investigate how things work.
  • Organisation & Reliability - Arrives prepared, manages learning and work commitments, and completes agreed tasks on time.
  • Communication & Teamwork - Listens well, asks for help when needed and contributes positively to the team.
  • Safety & Responsibility - Understands the importance of following workshop, quality and health and safety procedures.
  • Continuous Improvement - Welcomes feedback and looks for practical ways to develop their skills and improve their work.
  • Customer Focus - Understands that careful technical work and clear communication shape the customer's experience of Brompton.

What You'll Bring

  • A genuine interest in bicycles, mechanics, engineering or practical problem solving.
  • Motivation to complete a structured apprenticeship and build a long-term career in bicycle mechanics.
  • A careful, responsible approach and willingness to follow technical and safety instructions.
  • A positive attitude, curiosity and confidence to ask questions and learn from others.
  • The ability to work collaboratively and communicate clearly.
  • Commitment to working onsite in Greenford in a practical workshop environment.
  • Eligibility for the apprenticeship, including working in England and meeting the training provider's initial assessment requirements in maths and English.
  • No previous professional bike mechanic experience is required. Relevant practical experience, whether through study, work, volunteering or personal projects, would be helpful but is not essential.

What Success Looks Like

  • You make steady progress through your apprenticeship and complete learning activities and evidence on time.
  • Your practical confidence grows, allowing you to complete an increasing range of service and repair tasks safely and accurately.
  • Your work meets Brompton's expectations for care, quality and attention to detail.
  • You use feedback positively and take increasing ownership of your development and day-to-day work.
  • You contribute to a clean, safe, organised and supportive workshop.
  • You successfully complete the apprenticeship and End Point Assessment, building a strong foundation for a career as a qualified bike mechanic.
Brompton Bicycle

About Brompton Bicycle

The Brompton bike was conceived as a product to help improve city living. It has established itself as the ideal choice for all those who are living or interacting with cities. The bike can be folded to a third of its size in a matter of seconds and is small enough to be taken on all forms of public transport. In fact, 42 Bromptons can fit in one car parking space!

The Brompton bike was first designed by Andrew Ritchie in 1975 opposite the Brompton Oratory in South Kensington, hence the name. The first prototypes were all designed and built in Andrew’s flat and while they were rough and crude, the majority of the key design features were already evident, such as the pivoting rear triangle that allows the rear wheel to fold underneath. Andrew looked for support from various banks and bike manufacturers, but none were willing to support his dream. Julian Vereker, an entrepreneur and the owner of an early Brompton prototype, joined Andrew in 1985 and helped to provide the money which put Brompton into full time production for the first time in 1988. Fast forward to 2016, and Brompton now offers 16.5 million combinations on the bike, every one of which is still made by hand in London.

It is now estimated that there are over 80,000 Brompton bikes in London. Three-time winner of the Queen’s Award for Enterprise, the company sells over 45,000 bikes in 44 countries around the world every year. Sales have been growing at a fast rate with the help of Brompton Junction retail stores in London, Barcelona, Munich, Beijing, Milan, Hamburg, Shanghai, Chengdu, Amsterdam, Tokyo and Kobe.
