Applied AI Data Scientist – GenAI & Intelligent Automation

As an Applied AI Data Scientist, you will focus on applying Generative AI and machine learning techniques to solve real business problems across Commercial Operations. This role is centered on building practical AI solutions — from intelligent automation to decision-support tools — working closely with business stakeholders and engineering teams.

You will operate at the intersection of data science and applied AI, with an emphasis on LLM-based solutions, automation, and real-world implementation, rather than pure research or infrastructure ownership.

What You’ll Do at Alcon

• Translate business needs into AI-driven solutions, including automation and decision-support tools
• Design and develop LLM-based applications, such as copilots, workflow automation, or internal AI tools
• Apply machine learning and AI techniques to improve reporting, forecasting, and operational efficiency
• Experiment with and evaluate Generative AI approaches (prompting, embeddings, structured outputs)
• Collaborate with engineering teams to deploy AI solutions into production environments
• Monitor performance, iterate on solutions, and improve reliability over time
• Communicate AI capabilities, limitations, and trade-offs to non-technical stakeholders
  

WHAT YOU'LL BRING TO ALCON:

Education

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Data Science, Computer Science, Engineering, Statistics, or related field

Experience

• 3+ years of experience in Data Science, Machine Learning, or Applied AI roles
• Hands-on experience working with Generative AI or LLM-based use cases (academic, personal, or professional projects acceptable if practical)
• Experience developing data-driven or AI solutions in business environments
• Exposure to deploying models or working with production-ready solutions

Technical Skills

• Strong proficiency in Python and SQL
• Experience with machine learning techniques and model development
• Exposure to Generative AI tools and frameworks (e.g., OpenAI APIs, LangChain, similar ecosystems)
• Familiarity with:
  • Prompt design and iteration
  • Embeddings and retrieval-based approaches
  • Evaluating outputs of AI systems
• Experience working with cloud platforms (AWS preferred)
• Understanding of data pipelines and working with structured/unstructured data

Soft Skills

• Ability to explain AI concepts clearly to non-technical audiences
• Strong problem-solving mindset and curiosity for new technologies
• Comfortable working in ambiguous, evolving environments
• Collaborative approach and openness to feedback
• Ownership mindset with interest in growing technical impact
