Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.

Corning’s Optical Communications segment is seeking an Applications Engineer to provide technical and subject matter expertise to Tier 1 carrier network customers, with a primary focus on fiber optic cable installation technology. This customer-facing role partners closely with Sales, Product Line Management (PLM), and product development to deliver training, resolve field issues, and support customer deployments across outside plant (OSP) and inside plant (ISP) environments.
PRIMARY DAY-TO-DAY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Serve as a subject matter expert on assigned fiber optic products and installation methods; deliver in-person and virtual training to customers and contractors across the U.S.
  • Partner with Sales, Product Line Management (PLM), and product development to investigate and resolve field issues — including on-site visits to document findings and drive resolution
  • Develop technical training materials and documentation, including installation procedures, specifications, and training videos
  • Support customer first office applications (FOAs) and field trials to ensure successful product deployment
  • Learn customer network architecture to develop bills of materials (BOMs) and recommend Corning product solutions
  • Convey Voice of Customer insights to commercial and PLM teams; contribute field installation and customer preference input to product development efforts
WORK HOURS, LOCATION AND TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS
  • Travel: Up to 50%
  • Work Schedule: 40 hours/week
  • Work Location: Charlotte, NC
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering
  • Minimum 1 year of experience in a technical telecommunications role; OR 4+ years of experience in a technical field without telecommunications experience
  • Experience leading or serving as technical lead on projects
  • Ability to consolidate technical and commercial data from multiple sources into a clear, comprehensive technical position
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Visio, PowerPoint)
  • 100% English proficiency, written and verbal
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Experience with fiber optic cable and component installation practices (OSP and/or ISP)
  • Proficiency in statistical analysis and process improvement methodologies (e.g., Performance Excellence, Six Sigma)
  • Proficiency in Spanish — verbal proficiency primary; written a plus
  • Completion of Fundamentals of Engineering (EIT) exam or Professional Engineer (PE) licensure
  • Communicates complex technical subjects clearly to non-technical audiences, including field contractors, customers, and executive stakeholders
  • Builds effective working relationships across all levels of an organization — from plant employees to executive leadership

The range for this position is $80,670.00 - $110,921.00 assuming full time status. Starting pay for the successful applicant is dependent on a variety of job-related factors, including but not limited to geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education.
