Job Description

Application Support Officer | Nr Wigton, Cumbria | £35,000 – £40,000 | On-site

About the Opportunity

Are you someone who enjoys getting to the bottom of a problem, communicating clearly, and being the person people turn to when something isn't working? Do you want a role with real variety, genuine progression, and the chance to be part of something a bit different?

Foxgroves Recruitment is working with a well-established, globally connected manufacturer near Wigton to find an Application Support Officer to join their on-site team. This is a role with a lot of personality to it, and the right person will thrive on variety, enjoy working with people across all levels of a business, and be comfortable being the local expert in a globally supported team.

This client is a well-regarded local employer with many long-serving staff, this is a business people are truly proud to work for.

What the Role Actually Involves

You'll be supporting an internally developed bespoke ERP system which underpins everything from manufacturing and sales through to finance and distribution.

Day-to-day Support

You'll be the first point of contact on site when users have issues with the system. That means logging, triaging, and resolving queries, chasing down problems through SQL investigation and user conversations, and keeping people updated throughout.

Project Support and Requirements Gathering

When the business wants to improve or extend the system, you'll work alongside the off-site development team to gather requirements, document processes, and help shape what a solution should look like. You don't need to be a developer, but you do need to be able to ask the right questions and capture the answers clearly.

Implementation, Training and Go-live

Once a new feature or fix is ready, you'll coordinate the rollout on site. That means communicating with users, planning when changes go live, delivering training, and being on hand to support once things are up and running.

One of the most important parts of this role is being the link between on-site users in Cumbria and the IT development team based off site. You'll need to listen carefully to what users are telling you, translate that into something structured and clear, and communicate it effectively via email and teams. Strong written communication skills are just as important here as technical ability.

About You

What matters most is attitude, curiosity, and the ability to pick things up quickly.

You'll need:

  • Solid SQL skills, this is essential. You'll be interrogating data regularly to diagnose issues, and the team will rely on you to be comfortable doing this
  • A good working understanding of IT terminology and concepts. You don't need to be a developer, but you do need to follow technical conversations confidently
  • Strong communication skills, both in person and in writing. You'll be speaking to everyone from the warehouse floor to senior management, and writing clear, structured updates for a remote developer team
  • The confidence to challenge users when their interpretation of a problem doesn't stack up, and the warmth to do it in a way that keeps the relationship strong
  • A proactive, adaptable mindset. This is not a role where every day looks the same

Desirable but not essential:

  • Experience in an application support, IT support, or systems-focused role
  • Familiarity with ERP systems such as SAP, Dynamics, or similar.
  • A relevant IT qualification, degree, or Level 3 IT apprenticeship. Equivalent practical experience is equally welcome

What the Onboarding Looks Like

There is a structured induction programme in place. In your first couple of months, you'll have regular calls with the off-site IT team, spend time with each department on site to understand how they use the system day-to-day, and be supported throughout by a globally connected team with 24-hour cover available for any urgent issues. You will be well supported.

What's on Offer

  • £35,000 – £40,000 depending on experience
  • On-site role near Workington, free parking on site
  • 36.25 hours per week, 8am–4pm or 9am–5pm with 45-minute lunch
  • 25 days holiday plus bank holidays
  • Pension: 3% employer contribution, 5% employee via salary sacrifice
  • Subsidised canteen
  • Internal training opportunities and staff sales scheme
  • Death in service at 1.5x salary
  • Annual flu jabs
  • Real scope to grow. There is a real opportunity to move into coding and testing and the role will only grow and expand as the business does
