Job Description

Application Engineer II

Location: Hyderabad, India

Are you a database engineering expert who thrives on solving complex technical challenges at a global scale? At Swiss Re, we are on a mission to make the world more resilient — and we need sharp, curious, and collaborative technologists to help us get there. If you're passionate about building robust, enterprise-grade database solutions and want your work to have real-world impact, this could be your next great move.

About the Role

As an Application Engineer at Swiss Re, you will be at the heart of delivering technology solutions that power our Life & Health Reinsurance business. You will own the end-to-end technology delivery of products and manage the full application lifecycle — from planning and design through to deployment and continuous improvement. Working alongside Engineering Leads and Product Owners, you will help shape the technical direction of critical business applications, collaborating with diverse global teams to deliver meaningful outcomes.

This is a role where your technical depth meets strategic thinking — and where your contributions will be felt across the entire organization.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and implement advanced Oracle SQL/PL-SQL solutions — including complex queries, stored procedures, functions, triggers, and packages — to support enterprise-grade applications

  • Perform Oracle database administration tasks including performance tuning, security configuration, and backup/recovery procedures to ensure high availability and data integrity

  • Create, modify, and maintain database objects such as tables, views, indexes, and constraints to support evolving application needs

  • Optimize database performance through query tuning, index optimization, and detailed execution plan analysis

  • Develop and manage ETL processes to extract, transform, and load data efficiently across various systems and pipelines

  • Diagnose and resolve database-related issues proactively, ensuring system stability, data integrity, and optimal performance

  • Partner with application developers, business analysts, and stakeholders to translate business data requirements into scalable and robust database solutions

  • Conduct and participate in code reviews to uphold database best practices, performance standards, and secure coding guidelines

  • Implement and maintain database security controls to safeguard sensitive and confidential information

  • Document database designs, development standards, and operational procedures in alignment with organizational guidelines

  • Stay current with the latest Oracle database features, tools, and industry trends, proactively recommending enhancements and improvements

  • Engage across global, cross-functional teams — both internal and external — bringing a collaborative and inclusive approach to every interaction

About the Team

You will be joining the L&H Re Engineering team — a global, passionate group of technologists dedicated to the technical architecture and engineering of IT solutions for Swiss Re's Life & Health Reinsurance business unit. Our team members bring deep expertise in both technology and reinsurance, and we pride ourselves on a culture of knowledge-sharing, continuous learning, innovation, and genuine collaboration. We work across borders and time zones, united by a shared commitment to delivering technology that makes a real difference in the world of reinsurance.

About You

You are a technically strong, pragmatic, and collaborative professional who thrives in complex, fast-paced environments. You bring a strategic mindset to technical challenges, are comfortable navigating ambiguity, and have a track record of delivering high-quality database solutions in agile, cross-functional teams. You communicate clearly, listen actively, and are energized by working with diverse teams across the globe.

We are looking for candidates who meet these requirements:

  • 7+ years of hands-on Oracle SQL and PL/SQL experience, with demonstrated expertise in building and maintaining enterprise-grade database solutions

  • Strong Oracle database administration skills, including performance tuning, security configuration, and backup/recovery procedures

  • Proven experience designing and developing complex database objects — stored procedures, functions, triggers, and PL/SQL packages — along with ETL process development and management

  • Strong expertise in advanced Oracle database concepts including Partitioning, Materialized Views, Sequences, and Synonyms for scalable and efficient data design

  • Proficiency in SQL Performance Tuning, including hands-on experience with SQL Trace, Explain Plan, Execution Plan Analysis, and SQL Tuning Advisor to identify bottlenecks and optimize query performance in high-volume systems

  • Solid understanding of relational database concepts, including normalization principles, data modeling techniques, and query optimization strategies

  • Experience leveraging agentic development practices and AI-assisted tools for query generation, code optimization, refactoring, and debugging — improving productivity, consistency, and development speed

  • Experience working in agile, cross-functional, and continuous delivery teams, with the ability to plan, prioritize, and deliver across multiple products simultaneously

These are additional nice to haves:

  • Familiarity with cloud-based database platforms or hybrid cloud environments

  • Experience with data pipeline tools and modern ETL/ELT frameworks

  • Exposure to the reinsurance or financial services industry and an understanding of business data requirements in that context

  • Strong documentation skills with experience writing technical specifications, development standards, and operational procedures

Our company has a hybrid work model where the expectation is that you will be in the office at least three days per week.
