Job Description

The Assistant Vice President (AVP) – Mainframe Technologies is responsible for leading the design, development, maintenance, modernization, and support of enterprise-critical mainframe applications. This role involves driving technology transformation initiatives while maintaining high service availability for production platforms and ensuring adherence to organizational standards, regulatory requirements, and risk controls.

The team you will be joining is part of Global Technology Services (GTS), which delivers enterprise technology capabilities that support State Street’s global businesses. Within GTS, this role aligns to the Fund Accounting value stream, focused on designing and delivering technology solutions that support high‑volume, time‑critical processing.

What you will be responsible for

As an AVP of Software Engineering & Development you will:

  • Lead end-to-end delivery of mainframe application development and maintenance initiatives.
  • Provide technical leadership for IBM Mainframe technologies including COBOL, PL1, JCL, DB2, CICS, and MQ.
  • Drive modernization initiatives.
  • Manage multiple projects across development and support teams.
  • Ensure delivery commitments related to scope, quality, budget, and timelines.
  • Coordinate with stakeholders for requirements, prioritization, and issue resolution.
  • Monitor project risks, dependencies, and resource utilization.
  • Lead root cause analysis and resolution for major production incidents.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives to reduce operational risk.
  • Lead and mentor development team members.
  • Support hiring, onboarding, and talent development initiatives.
  • Act as a primary technology partner for business, operations, and senior leadership.
  • Translate business requirements into scalable technical solutions.
  • Present status updates, risks, and strategic recommendations to leadership teams.
  • Identify opportunities to modernize legacy applications.
  • Drive adoption of automation, AI-assisted development, and engineering best practices.
  • Support migration and integration strategies between mainframe and cloud/distributed platforms.

What we value

These skills will help you succeed in this role

  • Strong expertise in Mainframe technologies - COBOL, PL1, JCL, DB2, and CICS.
  • Familiarity with performance tuning techniques.
  • Experience working in Banking, Custody, Asset Servicing, Fund Accounting, or Financial Services environments.
  • Strong knowledge of Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC), Agile, and release management.
  • Demonstrated critical thinking and sound decision‑making capabilities in complex environments.
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical abilities.
  • Good communication and stakeholder collaboration.

Education & Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or related field.
  • 12–16 years of IT experience with at least 8+ years in Mainframe development and support.

  • Experience with IDz
  • Experience with MQ
