Application DeveloperRole purpose:
The Application Developer will be responsible for designing, developing, and deploying software applications and tools that enable efficient management and exposure of domain resources. This role involves creating scalable, secure, and high-performing solutions aligned with Telstra’s technology roadmap and strategic objectives, ensuring delivery to defined service-level standards.
How the role contributes to business strategy?
Effectively and efficiently support a diverse set of technical projects with specific outcomes via programs of work in Technology delivery as well as expert input and recommendation with regards to future looking technical projects.
The measurable deliverables and outcomes of this role will be the design and delivery of quality Engineering solutions for Telstra’s Strategic Inventory and autonomous network.
Key Accountabilities:
• Design, develop, and maintain applications that support autonomous network functions such as intent ingestion, policy enforcement, optimisation pipelines, and closed-loop control.
• Implement APIs and microservices that integrate with network controllers, orchestrators, OSS/BSS systems, and vendor platforms.
• Build tools that automate network planning, design, configuration, provisioning, assurance, capacity management, and lifecycle operations.
• Develop solutions that support multi-year planning, cost optimisation, and vendor strategy modelling.
• Drive continuous improvement initiatives for systems and processes, aligning with best-practice standards.
• Commit to ongoing professional development in emerging technologies and methodologies.
• Work within Agile frameworks to maximize efficiency and deliver value rapidly.
Key Activities for this role:
• Build automation workflows and low-/no-touch processes for network provisioning, healing, scaling, and service assurance.
• Work with orchestration technologies (e.g., ONAP, TM Forum frameworks, cloud-native functions).
• Integrate AI/ML models into network decision-making pipelines, including anomaly detection, predictive capacity, and optimisation.
• Conduct unit, functional, and integration testing for complex telecom environments with heterogeneous vendor stacks.
• Build simulation, emulation, or digital twin components to test autonomous behaviour safely.
• Ensure applications are resilient, secure, and meet telco-grade reliability standards (five-nines focus).
Essential Technical Skills:
• Bachelor’s degree in Software Engineering, Computer Science, Telecommunications Engineering, or equivalent experience.
• Experience in application development within telecom or large-scale distributed systems.
• Strong programming skills in Python including microservices development.
• Experience with REST/gRPC APIs, event-driven systems, and messaging platforms (Kafka, RabbitMQ).
• Experience with cloud-native development: Docker, Kubernetes, CI/CD pipelines.
• Familiarity with network automation frameworks: Ansible, NETCONF/YANG, gNMI, or vendor APIs.
Highly desirable skills:
• Experience developing systems for OSS/BSS, network orchestration, or SDN/NFV.
• Exposure to AI/ML for network analytics or autonomous decisioning.
• Experience building digital twins or network simulation tools.
• Telecom domain experience
• Comfortable working with complex technical ecosystems and ambiguous requirements.
• Ability to collaborate with both software engineers and network subject-matter experts.
• Strong analytical mindset with a passion for automation and simplification.
• Proactive, innovative, and eager to push the boundary of autonomous networks.
