The Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) provides assessment, management and outcome evaluation for patients in inpatient and outpatient settings. The APRN serves as a resource to educate patients, families, professional nurses, and staff; functions as a liaison between patient, family and UofL Physicians staff; and participates in clinical research. The APRN should demonstrate an advanced level of medical and nursing knowledge, clinical and technical competency, sound clinical judgment, professionalism as it relates to interpersonal and general communication skills, timely and compliant documentation, and takes responsibility for ongoing professional development and competency validation.
The Advanced practice provider (APP) will work in collaboration with the CVICU (Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit) Intensivists and adult cardiothoracic surgical teams. The APP in the CVICU is responsible for participating in the appropriate rounds (morning or evening). When there is no night intensivist coverage in the CVICU, the APP pre-rounds to determine any urgent issues that need to be addressed with the intensivist including the following:
* Hemodynamic instability and increasing
pressor requirements
* Increasing oxygen requirements or worsening
ventilator status
* Concerns regarding developing infection and/or bleeding
In addition to the ICU attending, the primary surgical services must be updated regarding these issues.
The APP is also responsible for triaging transfers to the floor and bed availability for post-operative cases.
Education and Certification:
APRN graduate of an accredited program with a Master of Science in Nursing. Board certification is required. Acute Care Certification focus is preferred, but not required.
PA graduate of a physician assistant program accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for Physician Assistants or its predecessor or successor agencies and has passed the certifying examination administered by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants or its predecessor or successor agencies.
Required Licensure:
APRN and RN in the state of Kentucky. Physician Assistant in the state of Kentucky.
Other certifications: ACLS/BLS certified-Can obtain upon employment. DEA-obtain upon employment.
