General Description and Classification Standards

The Inventory Specialist assists the supervisor with the inventory, accountability, storage, and safeguard of warehouse merchandise for the City of Atlanta; maintains records of all inventory and produces inventory reports for the Inventory Manager.

Supervision Received

This position will work under the direct supervision of the City of Atlanta Department of Watershed Management (DWM) Asset Accountability Management Director. Must be able to work well both independently and collaboratively with a team.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities These are typical responsibilities for this position and should not be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive.

  • Counts all warehouse inventory and supplies.
  • Inventory all merchandise on a periodic basis.
  • Maintain computerized and manual files for tracking inventory.
  • Reports on all discrepancies to the inventory manager.
  • Operate electronic and other equipment needed to carry out job functions and responsibilities.
  • Locates and removes expired or defective merchandise from the inventory.
  • Works with the warehouse manager to brainstorm ways to reduce inventory discrepancy and possible theft or “shrink.”
  • Uses computerized inventory software to record, track, and maintain all inventory-related data.
  • Assists employees in the warehouse when necessary.
  • Assists in the organization of the warehouse.
  • Processes daily, weekly, and monthly reports of inventory statistics.
  • Must be flexible to work beyond normal work hours and work week.
  • Perform any duties and responsibilities that are within the scope of employment as assigned by the supervisor.
  • May perform other duties as assigned.

  • Must have skills in the Microsoft Office suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Intermediate or Advanced.
  • Be able to pass an extensive background check due to the equipment being processed and handled.

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience

  1. Have obtained a High School Diploma or High School Equivalency Diploma
  2. Possess Basic Computer skills
  3. Must be proficient in basic mathematics.
  4. Must be able to communicate effectively in English.
  5. Must be able to lift seventy (70) pounds.
  6. Must have prior warehouse experience
  7. Physical and electronic inventory reporting experience
  8. Document filing experience - Shelf stocking experience
  9. Have shipping and receiving experience

Work Environment

  • Warehouse environments can range from temperature-controlled to, at times, dusty, noisy, unpleasant odors, or having, occasionally, extreme temperatures.
  • Involves, for the most part, indoor manual labor with significant physical demands such as lifting and standing for long periods. Some forklift and/or pallet jack use.

Lifting Requirements: Heavy work: Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Work Schedule: This position follows the City’s hybrid work schedule policy as assigned by the Department of Human Resources Commissioner and requires in-person work at City worksites/facilities at least four (4) days per week, with the option to work remotely one (1) day per week, based on eligibility, departmental needs, and supervisor approval. The hybrid work schedule is subject to change at any time to five (5) days in-person work.
