Under the direction of the Vivarium Manager, the Animal Technician performs duties related to the daily care of animals, working with different species of animals and aquatic organisms as assignments dictate.

Duties:

  • Maintain proper levels of food and water for all animals

  • Observes animals daily and records census

  • Report injuries or illness of animals to the Vivarium Manager or Consulting Veterinarian

  • Perform minor medical treatment of animals when needed

  • Changeout and sanitize animal bedding, cages, water bottles and related items.

  • Operate cage washer and sterilizer as required

  • Perform miscellaneous housekeeping, sanitize animal rooms, floors and support areas

  • Light maintenance/troubleshooting of equipment

  • Monitor water quality in aquaria and maintenance of aquarium systems

  • Provide occasional technical assistance such as restraint, ear tagging, and injections.

  • Training will be provided.

  • Perform emergency euthanasia

Qualifications:

  • Previous animal care and handling experience required.

  • Must be willing to work with a variety of laboratory animals including rodents, birds, aquatic species, and invertebrates.

Note that strong scents are not permitted in the vivarium, including colognes, deodorants, perfumes, smoking, vaping, etc.

Requirements:

  • No known allergies to animals

  • Ability to lift 50 lbs

  • Willing to work shared weekends and holiday duties.

  • High school diploma (college degree preferred)

  • AALAS Certified Technician (ALAT) certification required within 3 months of eligibility. Guidance for this will be provided and the College will cover the cost of the certification exam (one-time cost).

Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States without employer’s sponsorship now or in the future

This position has been classified as essential personnel. In the event of inclement weather or other emergency conditions that require the College to close, you are expected to report to work if you are scheduled to work that day, in accordance with Article 8.1.f of the Independent Service and Maintenance Union contract.

Position Details:

Science Center

Work Days and Hours: 28 hr/wk; 4 days/wk; alternating coverage on holidays and covering one weekend day (typical schedule would be Sunday through Wednesday 8:00am-4:00pm.)

Salary:

Please note, this role will be paid in accordance with the wage progression schedule set forth by the IMSEUA CBA contract.

  • Start at 80%, $31.88/hr

  • Then go to 90% after 120 days, $35.87

  • Then 100% at one year anniversary, $39.85 ($40.95/hr after July 1, 2026)
