Answers telephone, dispatches and operates radio for Animal Services; assists citizens and visitors to shelter, maintains shelter records; types of correspondence and files. Assists Animal Services Officers as needed.

Examples of duties

Management reserves the right to add, modify, change, or rescind the work assignments of different positions and to make reasonable accommodations so that qualified employees can perform the essential functions of the job.

  • Answers incoming calls; assists callers in providing information and answering questions; screens calls and route to appropriate person.
  • Assists citizens and visitors to the shelter; gives and receives information as needed.
  • Operates two-way radio and dispatches officers as needed.
  • Files; types reports, records and correspondence.
  • Collects fees for licensing, vaccinations and impoundments; processes paperwork and balances monies.
  • Compiles weekly and monthly reports for shelter activity.
  • Maintains records on the automated animal records management system.
  • Prepares all documentations for code violations.
  • Assists officers in handling and impounding animals brought to the shelter. May assist in performing humane euthanasia of animals as directed.
  • Assists Animal Services Officers as needed.
  • Cleans kennels as necessary.
  • Performs all other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education: High School Diploma or GED.

Experience: One (1) year of related experience required.

Any combination of related, education, experience, certifications, and licenses that will result in a candidate successfully performing the essential functions of the job is an acceptable substitute for the above specified education and experience requirements.

Licenses and Certifications: None.

Conditions of Employment: Must submit to and pass a criminal background and pre-employment drug test. Must possess a valid State of Texas Drivers License Class “C” and good driving record as defined by City policy. An applicant who does not possess a Texas Driver's License or proper class, will be allowed ten (10) working days after a job offer is made to obtain proper licensing.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

Skilled In: Handling and working with animals; telephone skills; personal computer including Microsoft Office, Open Office or similar word processing programs, e-mail and the internet.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions: This is primarily a sedentary office classification although standing in work areas and walking between work areas may be required. Finger dexterity is needed to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard or calculator and to operate standard office equipment; vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone. While performing this job, employees routinely stand, walk, reach with hands and arms, talk, and hear. The position may occasionally require lifting or carrying supplies, animals, or equipment.

Employees must regularly lift, push, or pull up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift, push, or pull up to 50 to 75 pounds with or without assistance. Typical daily lifting requirements for certain tasks range from 10 to 25 pounds.

Employees work in an office environment with moderate noise levels, controlled temperature conditions, and no direct exposure to hazardous physical substances. Employees may interact with upset staff and/or public and private representatives in interpreting and enforcing departmental policies and procedures.
