Job Location ANIMAL SERVICES - Brunswick, GA 31525 Salary Range $20.68 Hourly

This is a full-time position and receives all benefits afforded to regular employees. This position requires working 40 hours per week.

The purpose of this classification is to ensure compliance with animal control ordinances and laws, to include responding to complaints pertaining to animals, transporting/handling animals, and ensuring the safety/welfare of citizens.

Essential Job Functions: The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned. This classification is part of the broadband compensation plan. Duties listed may not be performed by all incumbents, and level may be assigned in accordance with the skills and proficiencies demonstrated by the incumbent.

  • Enforces provisions of applicable animal control ordinances, laws, and regulations.
  • Issues citations as appropriate.
  • Provides information, education, and assistance to the public concerning animal control issues; animal control ordinances, humane treatment of animals, animal behavior problems, or related issues; takes appropriate action on complaints; mediates/resolves citizen disputes.
  • Responds to incoming calls/complaints concerning various animal issues, such as animal bites, potential animal cruelty/abuse, animals in distress, stray/nuisance animals, barking dogs, wild/dangerous animals, sick/injured animals, loose livestock, animal behavior problems, or animal control laws; responds to emergency calls and works with law enforcement personnel when needed.
  • Must operate animal control vehicle to respond to calls and to locate/pick up animals.
  • Handles, lifts, and carries animals, restraining as appropriate; handles frightened, fractious, and injured animals; checks animals for current license tags and for signs of rabies, disease, or other illnesses; administers injections of medication, tranquilizers, or other drugs; administers injections of identification microchips into animals; prepares and administers euthanasia injections to animals as appropriate, conducts vital sign checks to verify whether animals are deceased; dispose of deceased animals.
  • Provides care for animals while in custody of animal control personnel; performs cleaning, feeding, and watering of animals and animal facilities on a rotational basis.
  • Maintains thorough and complete paperwork.
  • Coordinates adoption of animals; prepares, files, and maintains official adoption documentation.
  • Conducts investigations into animal abuse and cruelty; performs follow-up as needed; issues citations to violators of the county animal control ordinance; presents cases in the Magistrate Court as appropriate.
  • Maintains logs/records of work activities. Operates a computer to enter, retrieve, review or modify data. Performs other related duties as required.

Qualifications & Benefits

Minimum Education, Training, and

Experience:
High school diploma or GED; supplemented by two (2) months of previous experience and/or training involving animal control, animal care/handling, or kennel work is required. Must be able to lift a struggling 70-pound dog onto the back of a truck using a catch pole.

Required Certificates/Licenses: Valid Georgia Driver’s License. Must be able to obtain the American Humane Association’s Euthanasia-by-Injection Certification and the National Animal Control Association’s Certification within one year of employment.
