Summary

Make a difference for people and animals in our community. As an Animal Control Officer, you’ll respond to animal-related calls, investigate complaints, enforce animal laws and ordinances, and help protect both public safety and animal welfare. From handling stray, injured, dangerous, and nuisance animals to responding to animal bites and cruelty concerns, you’ll play a hands-on role in keeping our community safe. You’ll also educate the public and work closely with shelters, veterinarians, and partner agencies to make a meaningful difference every day.

Examples of duties

• Patrols the city streets looking for stray animals, picks up loose animals, and issues citations to animal owners for violation of the leash laws.
• Investigates and follows up citizen complaints or requests for animal control work.
• Investigates and follows up on dog or other animal bites.
• Captures, tags, and logs animals into the humane shelter.
• Appears in court as necessary.
• Prepares accurate reports and maintains daily logs relating to animal control matters.
• Periodically inspects animal control vehicles and arranges maintenance and repairs as necessary.
• Keeps the special services supervisor and other supervisors advised of unusual circumstances or problems that come to their attention, whether criminal or administrative in nature.
• May be required to prepare and present a public presentation relating to animal control matters.
• Safely operates city vehicles in the performance of business-related activities and assigned duties.
• Performs related duties as required.
• Provides excellent customer service to both internal and external customers.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• Must be 18 years of age.
• High school diploma or G.E.D.
• Valid driver's license.

DESIRED EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING

• Driver's safety course i.e., the police department course.
• Some knowledge of and ability to handle wildlife of the area.
• Some experience in animal control enforcement.
• Some experience in developing new ideas and remedies to defend oneself from aggressive dogs, i.e., baton, stun gun, oc (pepper spray) training, dart guns.
• Some knowledge of contacts available for the public concerning animal problems that are not handled by city animal control.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS

• Must meet the applicable medical and vaccination requirements before being deployed into field duties involving these exposures.
• Must recognize and accept the expectation of ethical and law abiding behavior in both professional and personal life, as an example to the public you serve.
• Ability to successfully fulfill the required knowledge, skills, and abilities required of the position.
• Ability and willingness to work assigned shifts, including weekends and holidays, as assigned.
• Some typing ability.
• Some computer ability.
• Ability to respond to after-hours emergencies. Must be on-call (after hours) three to four hours per week, depending on shift assigned.
• Must be willing and able to attend conferences and meetings that update officers on issues that pertain to the job, i.e., rabies conferences.
• Regular attendance is an essential function of this job to ensure continuity.
• All Emergency Service Employees shall maintain their principal residence within the state boundaries of Arizona. All Emergency Service Employees, except those holding a position in Fire, will arrive at the assigned or emergency work location within one (1) hour from notification to report to duty.
• Incumbents of this position are subject to pre-employment drug screening, and post-employment random, post-accident, and reasonable suspicion drug/alcohol screening.
• Must have the ability to be contacted and to respond in a timely manner and be willing and able to perform emergency work on an evening, weekend, and 12-hour shift basis.
• Must possess, or obtain upon employment, a valid Arizona driver's license.
