We are excited to offer an opportunity for a passionate and experienced Animal Care Technician / Trainer Assessor to join our Animal Care team on a 12 month fixed-term basis. This role combines the day-to-day management of the College animal facility with the training, supervision, and assessment of students undertaking practical animal care duties.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide high standards of daily animal care, including feeding, cleaning, enrichment and health monitoring
- Ensure the welfare of all animals is maintained in line with relevant legislation and best practice
- Maintain excellent standards of cleanliness and hygiene throughout the animal facility
- Train, supervise and support students carrying out practical animal care duties and complete any relevant paperwork
- Demonstrate and promote correct animal handling, husbandry and safe working practices
- Assist with the organisation and preparation of practical teaching sessions
- Work collaboratively with teaching staff to support effective practical learning
- Order and manage animal care supplies, feed, bedding and other consumables
- Maintain accurate records relating to stock, feeding schedules, animal health checks and facility operations
- Provide cover during holiday periods, bank holidays and College closures to ensure animals receive appropriate care at all times
Skills, Knowledge and Expertise
- A minimum of a level 3 qualification in a relevant animal care
- Experience caring for a range of animals, including exotic species, small mammals and livestock
- Strong understanding of animal welfare legislation and health and safety requirements
- Experience of training, supervising or mentoring students, volunteers or staff
- Ability to demonstrate correct animal handling techniques and safe working practices
- Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage stock and maintain accurate records
- Flexible approach to working hours, including holiday and closure period cover
- TAQA Assessor qualification, or willingness to work towards one (desirable)
