About This Role

Lead animal care operations across both our vivarium and off-site farm facility locations, overseeing the health, welfare, and daily management of research animals. This role provides technical leadership to the animal care team, ensuring high-quality husbandry, accurate documentation, and compliance with study protocols and animal welfare standards.

Working closely with veterinary, research, and facilities teams, you will help support research objectives, monitor animal health and environmental conditions, oversee be responsible for animal procurement and housing records, and implement enrichment programs that promote animal well-being. The ideal candidate is a hands-on leader who is passionate about animal welfare, team development, and maintaining excellence in animal care operations.

What You’ll Do

  • Lead the daily care and well-being of animals by overseeing feeding, watering, medication administration, and maintaining clean, safe, and enriched living environments across vivarium and farm locations.
  • Mentor, train, and support animal care technicians, fostering a collaborative team environment focused on excellence in animal husbandry, welfare, and operational success.
  • Champion animal welfare and compliance by ensuring animals are properly housed, accurately identified, and cared for in accordance with established protocols and regulatory standards.
  • Coordinate essential resources by submitting orders for animals, feed, supplies, equipment, and materials needed to support high-quality animal care operations.
  • Oversee facility operations and equipment maintenance, proactively identifying reporting equipment, supply, and environmental needs to management to ensure a safe and efficient animal care program.
  • Monitor animal health and colony status through regular census activities, review of health and behavior records, and close observation of animal conditions and environmental parameters.
  • Maintain accurate housing and inventory records, ensuring animal housing logs and related documentation are complete, current, and audit-ready.
  • Partner with veterinary and animal care teams to identify, report, and respond to animal health concerns, supporting the highest standards of care and welfare.
  • Provide leadership during sensitive animal care procedures, including humane euthanasia and disposition activities, while ensuring adherence to established protocols.

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma and 5-8 years relevant work experience, or associate degree and 2-4 years of relevant work experience.
  • Good understanding of safety protocols for clinical environment and animal care.
  • Strong knowledge of sanitation and environmental guidelines, regulations, and study needs.
  • Good knowledge of regulations and policies pertaining to research animal care use.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Good computer skills
  • Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull up to 50 pounds on a regular basis.
  • Ability to safely handle and properly restrain laboratory animals.
  • Ability to work both indoors and outdoors in varying environmental conditions.

Location

  • This is a fully onsite position in Atlanta, GA that may require occasional availability for weekends, holidays, occasional overnight coverage, and travel to off-site facilities.
