Position Title Anesthetist/Clinical Anesthesia Officer

Reports: Anesthesiologist

Department: Medical

Work Schedule Full Time

Workplace: CURE Children’s Hospital of Ethiopia, Addis Ababa

The Anesthetist /Clinical Anesthesia Officer is responsible for providing safe and effective anesthesia care before in the perioperative period, and for providing anesthetic or resuscitative support to patients in other units within the hospital as needed. Patients may include those who are unable to pay, those whose care in subsidized and those who are private pay.

The Anesthetist/ Clinical Anesthesia Officer is responsible for performing the following:

Essential Duties

    1. Completes preoperative assessments on patients undergoing anesthesia and document assessment on patient records.
    2. Informs anesthesiologist/ Senior medical staff members when patients require further treatment before anesthesia and or when patients may be unstable pre, intraoperative or post anesthesia.
    3. Discusses with patients the type of anesthetic planned and the risks of anesthetics, and answers patient questions.
    4. Prior to beginning an anesthetic, checks the anesthesia machine, suction, oxygen supply, airway devices, etc. Prepares all medications and has available resuscitative drugs.
    5. Provides monitoring and other necessary care to patients undergoing procedures with local anesthesia, sedation, regional and general anesthesia.
    6. Provides a safe, effective and appropriate anesthesia based on the pre-operative assessment performed.
    7. Maintains records or all observations and anesthesia provided.
    8. Provides a comprehensive evaluation of the patient to the recovery nurse who will care for the patient.
    9. Provides emergency resuscitation to any patient as needed.
    10. Teaches and trains other staff members as needed.
    11. Performs other duties as assigned to further the mission of CECH.
    12. Attends all necessary meetings while on-duty.
    13. Acts as a consultant to the various departments in the hospital.
    14. Performs other duties as assigned to further the mission of CECH.
