About the opportunity:

The Medical Director of Anesthesiology provides clinical care and leads the clinical and physician dimensions of the anesthesia service line across Vail Health. This role combines active anesthesiology practice (60%) with clinical leadership and physician management responsibilities (40%). The role bridges the gap between clinical care and healthcare administration by overseeing medical staff, definigdefining care standards, ensuring regulatory compliance and driving quality improvement protocols. The Medical Director partners with the Senior Director of Anesthesia Operations on operational and financial performance, with perioperative services and surgical practices on perioperative care, and with executive leadership on service line strategy, to advance clinical excellence and a collaborative perioperative culture.

What you will do:

Clinical Practice (60%)

• Provide comprehensive anesthesiology services across Vail Health facilities.
• Deliver safe, high-quality perioperative care in surgical and procedural settings.
• Lead by example in clinical excellence, professionalism, and teamwork.
• Collaborate with surgeons, proceduralists, and perioperative teams to optimize patient outcomes and ensure seamless care delivery.
• Champion evidence-based practice, patient safety, quality improvement, and regulatory compliance.

Clinical Leadership & Physician Management (40%)

• Lead anesthesia department quality, safety, and clinical performance initiatives.
• Develop and oversee clinical protocols, standards, and performance improvement efforts.
• Evaluate, coach, mentor, and support the professional development of anesthesia physicians and CRNAs.
• Foster a collaborative, accountable, and high-performing provider culture.
• Serve as the primary clinical liaison between anesthesia, perioperative services, surgical practices, and hospital leadership.
• Partner with operational leaders on workforce planning, staffing, resource allocation, and strategic growth initiatives.
• Support physician and CRNA recruitment, onboarding, and retention efforts.
• Facilitate resolution of clinical and interpersonal issues while driving alignment across stakeholders.
• Lead change management, physician engagement, and culture-building initiatives that strengthen the perioperative environment.

What you will need:

• MD or DO with Board Certification in Anesthesiology.
• Active Colorado medical license (or ability to obtain).
• Demonstrated clinical excellence in anesthesiology.
• Prior medical leadership experience preferred.
• Experience in perioperative operations, physician engagement, and system-based care strongly preferred.

Pay is based upon relevant education and experience per hour.

Hourly Pay:

$600,000—$700,000 USD
