Anatomic Pathology Support Technician - Community Hospital-(260005BE)
A Brief Overview

Anatomic Pathology Support Technician is responsible for processing, describing, dissecting small tissue specimens and preparing slides for rapid diagnosis. This position receives, registers, and interprets medical information accurately to perform data entry and technical assessment of specimen integrity. Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment with fluids to identify Microbiology and/or Cytology, fixed tissues-Histology, or fresh- ALL intraoperative specimens to which requires adequacy or assessment by a Pathologist. This position is responsible for technical preparation of the assessment: touch preps, frozen sectioning, and staining. Specialized patient testing preparation/data entry required. Excellent analytical and communication skills are required to direct or provide information to clients, clinicians, or hospital divisions which will directly impact patient care. Maintains equipment and supplies as needed. Responsible for receipt, distribution, and return of patient pathology slides within the UH system. Position requires participation in regional float pool (as needed).

What You Will Do
  • Provides service to Clients, Patients, and Hospital Divisions. Answers phones, reports results, and assists clients (20%) Competency #7
  • Registers and Accessions Surgical and Cytology specimens for diagnosis, maintains specimen TAT and Integrity (40%) Competency #4
  • Sections tissue samples and stains slides for Frozen section histological diagnosis (15%) Competency #6
  • Assists with laboratory support functions (15%) Competency #5
  • Miscellaneous duties (10%) Competency #7
Additional Responsibilities
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Must abide by all requirements to safely and securely maintain Protected Health Information (PHI) for our patients. Annual training, the UH Code of Conduct and UH policies and procedures are in place to address appropriate use of PHI in the workplace.

Qualifications

Education
  • High School Equivalent / GED (Required) and
  • Associate's Degree in a science related field (Preferred)
Work Experience
  • 2+ years Of experience in a similar position and can demonstrate proficiency of all skills in that level. (Required) and
  • Prior histology lab experience (Preferred)
  • Previous Medical Laboratory experience (Preferred)
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
  • Lab equipment maintenance (Preferred proficiency)
  • Microsoft Office skills in Word and Excel (Required proficiency)
  • Customer service skills (Required proficiency)
  • Knowledge of medical terminology (Required proficiency)
  • Knowledge of pathology terminology (Required proficiency)
  • Knowledge of pathology lab testing including reflex pathways for anatomic pathology. (Required proficiency)
  • Computer skills essential; knowledge of laboratory information systems (Preferred proficiency)
