About the role

The Commercial & Market Analysis Intern will support the analytical activities that underpin Ampol's trading and shipping business.

A core focus of the internship will be vessel tracking, trade flow analysis, refinery monitoring and maintaining key market datasets. Through tracking physical movements, analysing country-level statistics and monitoring refinery activity, interns will develop an understanding of the drivers behind crude oil and refined product markets.

These activities form the foundation of commercial awareness and market understanding. As familiarity and competence grow, interns will have opportunities to contribute to market analysis, balance updates, dashboard development, process improvement, modelling and automation initiatives.

Depending on business requirements and individual strengths, interns may support:

  • Crude Oil
  • Distillates (Diesel & Jet Fuel)
  • Gasoline
  • Pricing & Data Analytics

We're looking for individuals who are curious enough to ask why, disciplined enough to follow the process, analytical enough to identify problems, and confident enough to investigate them independently.

Internship Details

This is a full-time, paid 6-month internship commencing in January 2027. Applicants should be available for the full duration of the internship.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct vessel tracking and trade flow analysis for crude oil and refined products.
  • Monitor and maintain country statistics, refinery operations, refinery outages and market datasets.
  • Support the development and maintenance of supply and demand balances.
  • Research global refining systems, energy markets and trade developments.
  • Produce regular reports, market updates, visualisations and pricing summaries.
  • Assist Commercial Analysts with market investigations and ad hoc analysis.
  • Develop dashboards and analytical tools to improve accessibility and understanding of market information.
  • Identify opportunities to enhance analytical workflows through process improvement, modelling and automation.
  • Collaborate with analysts, traders and other stakeholders on commercial and analytical initiatives.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Undergraduate students from Business, Finance, Economics, Analytics, Data Science, Computer Science, Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Petroleum Engineering or related disciplines.
  • Strong interest in commodity markets, energy markets and market analysis.
  • Good proficiency in Microsoft Excel.
  • Experience with Power Query and data transformation techniques.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail and commitment to data accuracy.
  • Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills.

Preferred

  • Experience with Power BI, dashboard development or data visualisation.
  • Exposure to Snowflake, Azure or cloud-based data platforms.
  • Experience working with large datasets and data validation.
  • Good proficiency in Python and/or SQL.
  • Interest in shipping, commodity trading, energy markets or supply chain analysis.
