Job Description

You deliver safe, expert care when it matters most. Now it’s time to find the same clarity and support in your own career. Whether you’re looking for better work-life balance, professional development, or a lifestyle change, New Zealand offers a strong mix of both.

You’ll be joining established clinical teams delivering high-quality anaesthesia and perioperative care across a range of specialties, with the chance to make a real impact on patient outcomes.

What makes anaesthesia in New Zealand different?

Broad generalist practice

Most roles require a wide scope across acute and elective surgery, obstetrics, and interventional procedures. You’ll build and maintain skills across multiple areas rather than being limited to one subspecialty.

Variety in the work

Especially in secondary and regional hospitals, you’ll see a real mix. General surgery, orthopaedics, obstetrics, trauma and emergency. No two days are the same.

Smaller, collaborative teams

You’ll be working closely with colleagues in supportive, multidisciplinary environments where your voice is heard and you can genuinely influence how things are done.

Strong training pathway

Anaesthesia training in Australia and New Zealand is recognised globally and supports a high standard of clinical practice across all subspecialties.

Regional and rural exposure

Some roles include outreach services, giving you the opportunity to work across different settings and communities.

The role

Anaesthetists work across secondary and tertiary hospitals, either in a generalist or subspecialist capacity depending on the service.

You may be involved in:

  • General surgery and orthopaedics

  • Cardiac, neuro and paediatric anaesthesia (larger centres)

  • Obstetrics and gynaecology

  • Trauma and emergency surgery

  • Pre-assessment and perioperative optimisation

  • Intensive care or pain services

There may also be opportunities to contribute to teaching, simulation, quality improvement or outreach work.

What it’s like to work here:

  • Supportive, multidisciplinary teams

  • Well-equipped theatres and modern systems

  • Collegial environments where anaesthetists are valued as clinical leaders

  • Protected non-clinical time

  • Flexibility depending on the service

  • Opportunities to get involved in service development and education

Salary and benefits:

  • Base salary: $185,380 - $267,980 depending on experience

  • On-call, overtime and availability allowances on top

You’ll also receive:

  • $16,000 CME allowance per year (pro-rata)

  • Up to 10 days CME leave

  • Six weeks annual leave

  • 12 public holidays

  • Long service leave and sabbatical options

  • Up to 14 weeks paid parental leave

  • Reimbursement of registration and practising certificate costs

What you need:

  • Eligible for registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand

  • Anaesthesia qualification comparable to FANZCA

  • Willing to complete a period of supervised practice if required (typically 6-18 months)

Lifestyle

New Zealand offers a mix of city living, coastal lifestyle and outdoor access. Whether it’s hiking, beaches, skiing or just slowing things down a bit, there’s a strong focus on balance outside of work as well.
