The Department of Military and Veterans Affairs (DMVA), Alaska Military Youth Academy (AMYA),
is recruiting for a MALE PLATOON LEADER!
This position is in the Supervisor Union (SU) bargaining unit at a range 15.
This position is open to Alaska Residents only.
Please check our Definition FAQ to determine if you qualify.
This Platoon Leader position at AMYA involves supervising and mentoring at-risk youth in a structured, military-style residential environment. The primary focus is helping youth develop positive life skills, appropriate behavior, accountability, and the ability to cope with challenges. The role also involves supervising subordinate staff, addressing and correcting inappropriate behavior, evaluating employee performance, documenting incidents and performance, and ensuring policies and procedures are followed. When violations occur, the Platoon Leader is responsible for recommending appropriate corrective action. In short, it’s a youth-development, supervision, discipline, and leadership position that requires strong communication, consistency, judgment, and the ability to maintain structure while supporting young people.
Together, these eight components show that AMYA is focused on whole-person development, not just discipline or academics. The program helps students learn to lead and work effectively with others, become responsible and engaged members of their communities, improve their reading and math skills and earn a diploma or GED, and develop practical employment skills such as résumé writing and interviewing. Students also learn everyday life skills, including financial management, teamwork, anger management, and avoiding drugs and alcohol. Health and hygiene education covers nutrition, substance awareness, and healthy relationships. Community service teaches responsibility and giving back, while daily exercise and sports promote physical fitness and healthy routines.
For the Platoon Leader position, this means you would be helping enforce and reinforce these areas every day. You would serve as a role model, mentor, supervisor, and disciplinarian while helping students build the habits and self-discipline needed to succeed after completing the 22-week program.
As a Platoon Leader with AMYA, you will play a key leadership role in overseeing the daily logistical and operational functions of the cadre section. You will provide direction, coordination, and support to ensure cadre operations are delivered effectively, efficiently, and in accordance with the highest standards of program integrity. This position offers an opportunity to strengthen leadership, organizational, communication, and decision-making skills while contributing directly to the success of the program and the community it serves. AMYA is committed to continuous professional growth and career development. Employees are encouraged to expand their knowledge and capabilities through ongoing training and professional development opportunities, including State-sponsored courses designed to build skills and support career advancement. These opportunities allow Platoon Leaders to develop as professionals while preparing for increased responsibilities and future career opportunities. In addition to meaningful leadership and development opportunities, AMYA provides a comprehensive benefits package designed to support employees both professionally and personally. Benefits include paid leave accrual, multiple retirement options, and comprehensive medical, vision, and dental coverage. Together, these benefits provide employees with valuable resources for maintaining their well-being, planning for the future, and building a sustainable career while serving the community.
AMYA is proudly situated at Camp Carroll on Joint Base Elmendorf/Fort Richardson (JBER), nestled amidst the scenic Arctic Valley with a three-mile paved trail for walking and jogging, and access to a no-cost fitness center and café at the Army. Guard Armory, providing opportunities to collaborate with military members and fellow state employees while supporting a healthy work-life balance and fulfilling our mission.
