Job Description

STATUS:   Classified – Non-Exempt

HOURS OF WORK:   will vary

  The job of Sign Language Interpreter was established for the purpose of providing support to the instructional program with specific responsibilities for interpreting for students who are Deaf or Hard-of-Hearing and their hearing peers; which also includes all district staff as well as the community members.  This job reports to Interpreter Specialist for Sign Language Interpreters.

PRIMARY DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Provides American Sign Language (ASL) and/or Conceptually Accurate Signed English (CASE) interpretation for any school sponsored activities with students, staff and the school community for the purpose of facilitating communication using sign to voice and voice to sign.
  • Assesses classroom, assembly hall, and other room setups for students, staff and school community (e.g. noise level, visibility, lighting, preferential seating, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring proper setup to facilitate effective communication using sign to voice and voice to sign.
  • Responds to emergency situations (e.g. all emergency drills, injured student, fights, etc.) for the purpose of interpreting voice to sign and sign to voice to ensure effective communication is happening when safety concerns arise.
  • Conducts meetings for the purpose of educating school district staff regarding the interpreter’s role and the intricacies of facilitation of communication using sign to voice and voice to sign.
  • Educates school community members and any individual regarding the Interpreter’s role, this education is continuously provided.
  • Confers with teaching staff for the purpose of conveying information and assisting the interpreting process to ensure the student understands the interpretation which is presented.
  • Provides teachers with input for the purpose of assisting in evaluating language needs of the student. This assessment is based off the IEP, (e.g. completing the IEP feedback form).
  • Participates in a variety of meetings, workshops and committees for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information required to perform functions and remaining knowledgeable with program guidelines.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.
Education and Experience Requirements: 


-  Kansas Commission for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Registration required

-  Minimum EIPA 3.5 or BEI Basic

-  Preferred EIPA 4.0, BEI Advanced, KQAS 4, NIC, or other RID Certification

-  Minimum of an Associate's degree with study in job related area

-  Preferred Bachelor's degree with study in job related area

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: 
  • SKILLS are required to perform multiple tasks with a potential need to upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions.  Specific skill-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include:  adhering to safety practices; operating standard office equipment including using pertinent software applications; preparing and maintaining accurate records; and using district approved crisis intervention techniques.  
  • KNOWLEDGE is required to perform basic math; read and follow instructions; and understand complex, multi-step written and oral instructions.  Specific knowledge-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include; instructional procedures and practices; age appropriate student activities; safety practices and procedures; conflict resolution; and stages of child development/behavior; and safe handling of blood-borne pathogens and crisis de-escalation techniques.   
  •  ABILITY is required to schedule activities, collect data; and use basic, job-related equipment. Flexibility is required to work with others; work with data utilizing defined and similar processes; and operate equipment using standardized methods.  Ability is also required to work with a diversity of individuals.  Problem solving is required to identify issues and create action plans.  Specific ability-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: communicating with diverse groups; maintaining confidentiality; setting priorities; working as part of a team; and working with constant interruptions. 
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions could occasionally require some of the following physical demands: some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and fine finger dexterity. Generally, the job requires a combination of sitting, walking and standing.
