Epic IT Manager, Ambulatory, HOD and Non-Epic Applications

The Epic Ambulatory/HOD IT Manager is responsible for leading the design, implementation, optimization, and support of Epic application solutions for physician practices, hospital outpatient departments, as well as the management of key third-party clinical applications, including Natus Neuroworks and Polysmith. This role supports ambulatory clinical operations by ensuring integrated, reliable, and efficient technology solutions that align with clinical workflows, regulatory requirements, and organizational goals.

The manager partners closely with providers, nursing, operational leaders, and vendors to translate clinical workflow needs into effective Epic and third-party system solutions. The position provides hands-on leadership and oversight of multiple Epic applications and interfaced applications, while leading a team of analysts to deliver stable, scalable, and high-quality IT services.

Key Responsibilities

· Lead the implementation, optimization, and ongoing support of Epic application solutions for medical group practices, hospital outpatient departments, and community connect practices. End users supported include providers and clinical support staff.

· Provide operational ownership and technical oversight of third-party clinical applications, including Natus Neuroworks and Polysmith. Partners with clinical operations and various IT teams, and vendors to ensure these applications meet both the clinical and business needs.

· Manage, mentor, and develop a team of Epic and application analysts; oversee workload prioritization, performance, and professional development

· Partner with clinical, nursing, and operational stakeholders to understand ambulatory and specialty practice workflows and translate needs into Epic and third-party application functionality

· Ensure effective use and adoption of Epic Ambulatory tools to support clinical documentation, scheduling, referrals, orders, and patient engagement

· Coordinate with vendors and internal teams on upgrades, enhancements, testing, issue resolution, and support models for Epic and third-party systems

· Collaborate with interface, infrastructure, security, and analytics teams to maintain system integrations, data integrity, and reporting capabilities

· Maintain Epic best practices, documentation standards, and compliance with organizational policies, security requirements, and regulatory standards

· Support Epic upgrades, new feature rollouts, ambulatory growth initiatives, and onboarding of new HOD practices or specialty services

Education

  • Bachelors' Degree preferred.
  • Experience in lieu of Bachelor’s Degree
  • 5 yrs relevant years experience with a degree
  • 7 yrs relevant years’ experience without a degree

Certification/Licensure

  • Epic Ambulatory certification/accreditation (Preferred)

  • Epic certifications/accreditation/proficiency in related modules (e.g., Beacon, Bones, HOD, Healthy Planet, Nurse Triage beneficial.

  • Certification or formal training in third-party clinical systems (e.g., Natus Neuroworks, Polysmith) a plus

Experience

  • Experience supporting and implementing Epic application solutions in a multi-practice environment

  • Prior experience leading or mentoring IT, Epic, or application support teams

  • Experience managing or supporting third-party clinical applications integrated with Epic, including vendor coordination and system interfaces.

  • Strong understanding of ambulatory clinical workflows, specialty care workflows, and outpatient operations

  • Demonstrated ability to partner effectively with providers, nursing, and operational leadership

  • Strong communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills

  • Experience with Epic integrations, workflows, and reporting structures

  • Familiarity with healthcare regulatory, security, and compliance requirements

Sentara Independence houses state-of-the-art medical equipment and highly-skilled physicians and staff. Sentara Independence is now an extension of the quality services at Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital including advanced imaging and physical therapy.
