The Alterations Manager is responsible for leading all aspects of the store alterations operation, balancing exceptional craftsmanship with operational excellence to deliver a premium client experience. This role is responsible for leading, developing, and coaching the alterations team. The Alterations Manager partners closely with store leadership and selling teams to drive sales, maximize productivity, ensure financial performance, and deliver consistent quality, turnaround times, and service standards. This role is accountable for maintaining an efficient, customer-centric workroom that supports Bloomingdale's luxury service expectations.

Essential Functions:

Leadership & Team Development

  • Lead and develop a team of alterations colleagues, fostering a collaborative and high-performing work environment. Provide regular coaching, feedback, and performance management to drive productivity, quality, and engagement.
  • Support hiring, onboarding, and training of new alterations team members.
  • Develop collaborative partnerships with Store Leadership to align alterations priorities with store sales, service, and business objectives.
  • Educate and support selling colleagues on alterations capabilities, garment fit, and opportunities to enhance the customer experience.
  • Promote adherence to company policies, procedures, and safety standards.

Client Experience & Communication

  • Clearly communicate alterations options, timelines, and expectations to clients.
  • Partner with selling colleagues to enhance the overall shopping experience and support sales.
  • Promote the value of alterations services by confidently communicating available services, craftsmanship, and fit solutions to clients and selling teams.
  • Support customer retention by consistently delivering exceptional service and quality that encourages repeat business.

Fitting & Technical Expertise

  • Demonstrate expert knowledge of garment construction, fabrics, and styling, including identifying garments and materials that can or cannot be successfully altered.
  • Maintain expertise across luxury fabrics and specialty garments, including leather, beading, eveningwear, and tailored clothing.
  • Review and validate markings to ensure accuracy and desired fit outcomes.
  • Support team with complex alterations, providing guidance and troubleshooting as needed.

Operations & Productivity

  • Manage department payroll, supplies, and non-payroll expenses to support financial goals.
  • Monitor alterations revenue and productivity while supporting achievement of department profitability goals.
  • Deploy staffing and workload effectively based on business demand, colleague skillsets, and production capacity.
  • Ensure accurate completion of operational paperwork and tickets.
  • Oversee preventative maintenance and repair of alterations equipment to minimize downtime and maintain productivity.

Quality & Compliance

  • Ensure timely completion of work while meeting customer specifications, quality standards, and delivery commitments.
  • Drive adherence to standardized alterations processes, safety procedures, and equipment operating standards.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum 10 years direct experience, multi brand/category experience preferred
  • Prior leadership experience required.
  • Basic computer skills required for administrative responsibilities.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with proven ability to communicate and share information with diverse groups of customers and peers
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule with retail hours, including day, evening, weekends, and/or holidays

Essential Physical Requirements:

  • Prolonged periods of sitting and standing/walking around store or department
  • Use of shop machines including sewing machine, press, etc
  • Ability to bend, reach, hear, and communicate as needed
  • Occasional use of computers and standard office equipment
  • Ability to lift and move up to 25 lbs. as required
