Purpose of Albuquerque Director of Development Role:
The Albuquerque Director of Development is responsible for procuring major gifts and supervising the Albuquerque annual giving. This position works closely with board members to identify and qualify new prospects, maintain and refresh Albuquerque board and staff portfolios, and publicly represents the organization in the Albuquerque and surrounding communities with a focus on cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding major and annual gifts. This position will also support marketing and donor recognition materials as needed. The Albuquerque Director of Development is part of NDI New Mexico’s administrative staff.
Primary Responsibilities:
Fundraising
- Works with the Executive Director and Director of Advancement to set contributed income goals for Albuquerque, coordinating with the Advancement team to oversee and carry out all Albuquerque fundraising, communication and marketing activities.
- Creates and maintains a personal annual portfolio of approximately 150+ individual and corporate (as appropriate) prospects and donors. Donor strategies include: identification, qualification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of prospects and donors via one-on-one meetings, telephone conversations, written correspondence, and emails.
- Creates and manages an annual solicitation strategy and benefit package for meeting the budget goals.
- Works with board members to maximize the portfolio process and build major donor activity in Albuquerque, with the goal of increasing membership in the Founders Circle and Circle of Excellence and meeting the individual giving goal, with the additional goal of laying the groundwork for young donors in Albuquerque.
- Manages and executes fundraising activities and communications and meets with the Albuquerque Development Committee and Corporate Council to plan for cultivation and stewardship opportunities which promote fundraising.
- Develops and sustains a network of broad local support through networking, attending special events, and building relationships with organizations and individuals who can support the work of NDI New Mexico, including but not limited to Albuquerque Public Schools, City of Albuquerque, and State of New Mexico.
- Communicates with, recognizes, cultivates, solicits and stewards Albuquerque donors.
- Promotes NDI New Mexico in the community through attending events outside NDI New Mexico
Administrative Leadership and Management
- Works with the Albuquerque Development team to recruit volunteers, manage and set goals for the Albuquerque committees, including: Gala and Development (Corporate and Individual Donors) and Corporate Council, with the ultimate goal of building a strong and sustainable fundraising base to support ongoing operations.
- Manages and sets goals for Albuquerque development positions as appropriate.
- Coordinates with Executive Director and Director of Advancement to develop the Albuquerque strategy for fundraising goals, staffing needs, and vision to achieve the growth objectives set forward in the organization’s long-range plan.
- Participates in coordinating event-related activity within the database to handle setup and manage event invitations, RSVPs, attendee tracking and registration, and other donor relations.
- Maintains up to date and accurate information in Salesforce; donor information, portfolio, opportunities, call reports, gift information, etc.
- Prepares quarterly reports for board meetings and senior staff meetings as needed.
Financial
- Works with the Director of Advancement and the Director of Finance and Administration to create an Albuquerque Development Budget and have a working knowledge of the entire advancement annual budget and overall organizational budget.
- Works with the Director of Advancement and the Director of Finance and Administration to ensure accuracy in monthly reconciliations, and tracking of budgets to stay within the approved budget.
- Reports any budget variances to Director of Advancement and Director of Finance and Administration.
- Tracks and reports fundraising goals, understands variances, and re-sets strategies to ensure current and future accomplishments.
- Tracks progress toward assigned budget items to ensure income goals are met, and expenses are not exceeded.
Marketing
- Works with the Marketing and Communications team including the Director of Advancement with the goal of significantly broadening our donor base for the overall visibility of our programs.
Other
- Leads or participates on the following committees: Advancement, Albuquerque Development, Albuquerque Gala Committee, Corporate Council and other committees as needed.
- Reports regularly to Director of Advancement on progress towards goals.
- Hires and trains the necessary Albuquerque development staff, as appropriate.
- Other duties as needed.
Working Conditions, Environment and Physical Requirements:
- Functions performed in a variety of environments including: NDI New Mexico offices, schools, residency sites, and other locations
- Requires reliable transportation and reimbursable in-state travel to NDI New Mexico locations, participating schools, residency sites, and community events
- Requires weekend and evening hours
- May be required to lift up to 15 lbs.
- May be required to navigate stairs
QualificationsKnowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:
Job Specific Requirements:
- College Degree
- Minimum 3-5 years’ experience in development, with demonstrable experience in direct major gift solicitation
- Communicates effectively through clear speaking, writing, and effective listening; writing samples required, preferably direct solicitation letters and proposals
- Strong organizational, computer, and smart-phone skills including extended familiarity with MS Office (Outlook, Word, Excel), strong development database skills, MS Windows file/folder management, and electronic (mobile and desktop) calendaring and emailing skills
- Demonstrates adaptability through a willingness to be flexible and versatile in a changing work environment while maintaining effectiveness and efficiency
- Willingness to assist with whatever needs to get done for the success of the organization including weekly donor visits outside the office, trips to Albuquerque, and running errands
- Management experience and supervision skills
- Solves problems by identifying causes, gathering and processing relevant information, generating possible solutions, making recommendations, and resolving problems
