Job Description

Ready to scale enterprise Generative AI products from prototype to production?

Why join us?

HSBC Productivity Suite is our AI-powered workspace used by 250,000 colleagues across the bank. We’re moving beyond conversational generative AI to build intelligent agents and integrations that connect colleagues with trusted enterprise knowledge, services and workflows.

You’ll join a global engineering team solving complex problems at significant scale. You’ll have the opportunity to shape how artificial intelligence is designed, governed and used across HSBC, with real influence over architecture, engineering standards and product direction.

The Opportunity

Our team consists of around 50 engineers across the UK, India, Poland and China. We’re growing our engineering capability in China and are looking for an experienced engineer to work as a senior technical contributor within one of our engineering pods.

As an Associate Director, Software Engineering, you’ll operate as an individual contributor, designing and delivering significant capabilities for HSBC Productivity Suite. You’ll take complex requirements from initial definition through coding, testing, release and production operation.

This is not a formal people-management role. You’ll spend most of your time on hands-on engineering while providing practical technical direction, removing delivery blockers and mentoring other engineers in the pod.

Job Purpose:

This role will carry out the following activities:

  • 10+years of Min experience.
  • Spend most of your time on hands-on engineering, writing, reviewing, testing and shipping production code for HSBC Productivity Suite.
  • Design and deliver significant generative AI capabilities and integrations, owning delivery from requirements through to production operation.
  • Act as a senior engineer within an engineering pod, making sound design decisions, clarifying ambiguity and breaking complex requirements into actionable deliveries.
  • Build secure, resilient and maintainable services, applying appropriate engineering controls across testing, deployment, monitoring, observability and production support.
  • Use and improve shared frameworks, platforms and reusable capabilities, giving constructive feedback and reducing duplication and technical debt.
  • Promote effective engineering practices, including the safe use of AI coding tools and agents to improve quality and delivery across the software development lifecycle.
  • Take an active role in production incidents, helping restore service, leading reviews and ensuring lessons result in practical improvements.
  • Mentor engineers through pairing, design and code reviews, knowledge-sharing and practical support, while informing technical direction through evidence and engineering expertise.

What you’ll need to succeed in the role:

  • Strong hands-on software engineering experience, with a record of designing, coding, testing and operating significant applications or product capabilities.
  • Effective use of AI coding tools, such as GitHub Copilot, to prototype, write, test and review code safely, with an interest in building agents that improve the software development lifecycle.
  • Strong Python expertise and practical knowledge of modern engineering practices, including application programming interfaces, microservices, databases, containers, automated testing and continuous integration and delivery.
  • Hands-on experience building AI, machine learning or generative AI solutions and taking them from experimentation into secure, reliable production use.
  • Practical knowledge of large language models, retrieval-augmented generation, agentic workflows, evaluation, guardrails, observability and responsible AI.
  • Sound engineering judgement across performance, security, resilience, maintainability, accessibility, technical debt and production operability.
  • Ability to clarify ambiguous requirements, identify the most important parts of a problem and deliver robust solutions with limited oversight.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to explain technical decisions clearly, challenge constructively and mentor engineers in a global team.

Building HSBC’s AI engineering capability

This is a chance to shape how enterprise AI engineering is built and scaled across HSBC. You’ll create the platforms, patterns and delivery discipline that help teams move from experimentation to production with confidence. The work spans technology and business outcomes with clear accountability for quality, reliability and measurable value. If you’re ready to help set direction for GenAI at enterprise scale we’d welcome your application.
