Job Description

BlueScope is an Australian born, global success story, spanning 18 countries, with a team of over 16,500 people. We're driven by innovation and are proud that the technologies in our products and brands, like COLORBOND® steel, inspire and protect everything from hospitals and bridges to stadiums and homes

The Global Data - AI team sits within BlueScope's Enterprise Technology, Data & Analytics function and is responsible for advancing the organisation's AI capability and helping unlock value through safe, scalable and responsible adoption of artificial intelligence. The team partners closely with business leaders and technical specialists to deliver AI solutions that improve decision-making, productivity and customer and employee experiences across BlueScope's global operations.

We are seeking an AI Engineer to design, develop and deploy enterprise AI solutions that deliver measurable business outcomes. Reporting to the Global Lead Advanced Analytics, you will play a key role in building production-grade AI products, Generative AI solutions, Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG) systems, agentic workflows, computer vision capabilities and reusable AI platform components that help shape BlueScope's future.

This is a hands-on technical engineering role for someone who can design, build, integrate, deploy and support production AI systems. It is not a business-user, AI adoption, prompt engineering or productivity-copilot role focused primarily on using off-the-shelf AI tools.

This role can be based in Melbourne (CBD) or Sydney (Mascot).

Key Responsibilities

As an AI Engineer, you will work at the forefront of AI innovation, developing practical solutions that solve real business challenges across BlueScope. You will collaborate with business stakeholders, data scientists, data engineers, architects, cybersecurity and platform teams to translate opportunities into trusted, scalable AI products and reusable enterprise AI capabilities.

Responsibilities include:

  • Design, develop and support production-grade AI applications, assistants, copilots and intelligent services.

  • Build and enhance enterprise Generative AI capabilities, including RAG and agentic AI solutions.

  • Develop scalable AI products that improve operational performance, productivity and decision-making.

  • Own and enhance reusable AI platform components, frameworks, engineering standards, templates and best practices that enable teams to build AI solutions safely and consistently.

  • Support the development of computer vision solutions for operational and manufacturing use cases.

  • Partner with stakeholders to identify, prioritise and deliver high-value AI opportunities.

  • Integrate AI solutions with enterprise systems, platforms and business workflows.

  • Ensure AI solutions are secure, maintainable, scalable and aligned to responsible AI principles.

  • Implement secure enterprise integration patterns, including access controls, environment separation, identity, data permissions, model access governance and collaboration with cloud, cybersecurity and platform teams.

  • Build production-grade RAG and GenAI patterns, including ingestion, indexing, retrieval quality, evaluation, observability, feedback loops, cost awareness and lifecycle support.

  • Contribute to technical product ownership for AI platforms and products, including requirements shaping, roadmap input, adoption support, technical documentation and engagement with internal teams and external technology partners.

Qualifications

You are a hands-on software engineer who enjoys solving complex problems and building innovative technology solutions that create tangible business value. You combine strong software engineering discipline, cloud platform experience and practical AI capability with a delivery mindset focused on production outcomes.

You will bring:

  • A degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Data Science, Information Technology or a related discipline.

  • Demonstrated experience in software engineering, AI engineering, platform engineering or a related technical field, with accountability for building and supporting production systems.

  • Strong Python development skills and experience building production-grade applications, APIs, services or reusable engineering components.

  • Experience applying AI, machine learning or Generative AI technologies to solve business challenges.

  • Depth in technical delivery beyond the use of AI productivity tools, including the ability to design, implement, test, deploy, monitor and improve AI-enabled software products.

  • Experience designing, developing and deploying enterprise applications or digital products.

  • Strong analytical, problem-solving and stakeholder engagement skills.

  • The ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary teams and influence outcomes through collaboration.

You will also bring experience working with modern AI engineering tools and platforms, enabling you to build, deploy, secure and scale enterprise AI solutions in a production-ready environment.

  • Experience with Azure and Databricks platforms.

  • Experience using AI engineering frameworks such as LangChain, LlamaIndex or similar technologies.

  • Knowledge of MLOps, DevOps and modern software delivery practices that support the deployment and management of enterprise AI solutions

  • Experience with secure cloud integration patterns, identity and access management, CI/CD, observability, testing and operational support for AI-enabled applications.
