Job Description

Worker Type:

Permanent

Here at BNZ, it's about more than just banking. We work together in an agile, energising environment to create innovative solutions through our promise "If you can imagine a better future, let's find a way."

We support wellbeing, flexible working and have a generous leave offering. There is the opportunity for growth, learning and career development. No two days are the same.

We have a fantastic opportunity for an experienced technical delivery lead to join the AI team building our capability across BNZ as AI Enablement Lead.

Mō te Tūranga | About the Role

The AI Enablement Lead is an embedded technical delivery role accountable for AI‑enablement and achieving measurable outcomes.

Beyond delivering AI initiatives end-to-end, the role is a force multiplier. It influences how our AI platforms evolve, champions the adoption of emerging tools and patterns, and builds capability on both sides of the house — engaging engineers to work effectively with AI, and helping business teams identify and shape high-value use cases.

We're looking for someone who's comfortable working inside a technical team but can also operate effectively out in the business — credible with engineers and stakeholders alike.

We sat down with our Head of Technology – Artificial Intelligence, who shared the following about the role.

What are some of the responsibilities for this role?

  • Acting as the primary AI technical lead within a business unit, partnering closely with stakeholders to identify, shape, and prioritise AI use cases aligned to business outcomes.
  • Acting as a technical link between the business and the central AI and platform teams — facilitating technical discussions, and feeding real-world delivery insight back into platform strategy and roadmap decisions.
  • Owning the translation of business problems into deliverable AI initiatives, working with solution architects to design appropriate approaches and ensure alignment to approved platforms and patterns.
  • Driving delivery by coordinating with programme and tech leadership to secure priority, funding, and the right delivery resources (e.g. business analysts, solution architects, engineers).
  • Leading AI initiatives through delivery, accountable for progress, quality, and ensuring solutions are successfully implemented into live operations.
  • Driving adoption of new AI tools and patterns, and championing the technical uplift needed for teams to use them well.

What is the most exciting thing about this opportunity?

This is a fast-paced opportunity with real momentum behind it. There’s strong organisational support allowing you to work at the cutting edge of agentic AI. You’ll be part of a phenomenal team and gain exposure to diverse teams and use cases across BNZ, shaping how AI is delivered safely and effectively at enterprise scale.

What is the most challenging thing about this opportunity?

The biggest challenge is the pace of change in the agentic AI space. The technology, patterns, and best practices are evolving rapidly, requiring you to stay current while still delivering meaningful progress in the here and now.

It also means continually challenging your own assumptions - making informed decisions based on what is known today, while accepting that those decisions may need to be revisited as the landscape shifts.

What will success look like for the candidate in this role?

Success means AI initiatives within assigned business domains are delivered, adopted, and creating real value, with strong support from both business and technology teams. Specifically, the candidate will:

  • Be trusted as the embedded AI delivery lead and partner within the business.
  • Build strong relationships across business and technical teams, bringing people along the AI journey and building confidence through real outcomes.
  • Act as a credible technical link to central AI and platform teams, developing a deep understanding of available tools and patterns.
  • Translate domain needs into clear delivery priorities and feedback that informs platform capability and roadmap decisions.
  • Take priority problems through to production AI solutions, mobilising the right resources and driving delivery across squads.
  • Ensure solutions are embedded into day‑to‑day processes and actively used.
  • Provide clear visibility of progress, risks, and outcomes.

What specific tech skillswould be beneficial?

We are looking for an experienced delivery lead with proven project leadership and technical leadership skills. Alongside this you will bring:

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, including influencing
  • Experience in Agile ways of working, enabling and supporting Agile delivery, and translating Agile delivery methodologies into Enterprise reporting
  • Ability to operate as a hands-on delivery lead - comfortable working directly with engineers, BAs, and business SMEs rather than managing at arm’s length.
  • Strong hands‑on understanding of modern GenAI concepts, including LLMs, embeddings, retrieval‑augmented generation (RAG), prompt engineering, and agent‑based patterns.
  • Practical experience applying AI capabilities within real delivery contexts (e.g. integrating AI into existing systems, workflows, and products rather than standalone experimentation).
  • Solid grounding in software engineering fundamentals and SDLC practices, including APIs, data flows, cloud platforms, CI/CD, and production deployments.
  • Ability to assess technical feasibility, risks, and architectural fit in partnership with solution architects and platform teams.

Nice to have

  • Experience working with AI platforms and toolkits (e.g. model services, orchestration layers, evaluation tooling, guardrails) and understanding their trade‑offs and constraints.
  • Understanding of responsible AI, security, and risk considerations when deploying AI in regulated environments.
