PermanentFinning Canada is looking to hire a permanent, full-time AI & Analytics Engineer-I based either in Edmonton or Calgary who will work in an early-career, hands-on role that supports Analytics Engineering and AI agent development initiatives. This role contributes to building clean, governed data assets in Microsoft Fabric and assists in developing task-oriented AI agents using M365 Copilot and Microsoft Foundry, under the guidance of senior engineers.
The AI & Analytics Engineer-I focuses on learning and applying best practices in data modeling, transformation, and AI agent configuration. This individual helps ensure that data models and agents are accurate, documented, secure, and reliable, while building foundational skills in analytics engineering and applied AI.
Major Job Functions:
1) Build and support AI agents using Copilot & Microsoft Foundry
· Assist in configuring and improving Copilot and Microsoft Foundry agents that automate clearly defined business tasks.
· Implement agent grounding using approved data sources (e.g., Azure AI Search) and predefined tools or actions.
· Follow established AI governance, safety, and documentation standards; validate agent behavior through testing and user feedback.
· Maintain prompts, configurations, and basic telemetry with guidance from senior team members.
2) Build and maintain data models in Microsoft Fabric
· Develop and enhance curated gold-layer data models following provided designs, naming standards, and star schema principles.
· Implement data transformations using Fabric Pipelines, Dataflows, or Notebooks under supervision.
· Document table definitions, measures, refresh logic, and lineage according to team standards.
3) Support data quality and validation activities
· Assist in implementing data quality checks, validation rules, and schema reviews.
· Investigate data issues using SQL, DAX, or Python with guidance; escalate anomalies and risks appropriately.
4) Collaborate on requirements and solution delivery
· Participate in requirements discussions to understand business processes and analytical needs.
· Work closely with Data Engineering, BI, Platform, and Security partners to deliver assigned components.
· Contribute to documentation, change notes, and runbooks to support solution landing and supportability.
5) Learning and skill development
· Build foundational knowledge in Microsoft Fabric, Power BI, Copilot, and AI agent patterns.
· Stay current with team standards, tooling updates, and recommended best practices.
· Actively incorporate feedback and lessons learned into day-to-day work.
Accountability:
· Adheres to enterprise standards for security, documentation, testing, and change control.
· Maintains clear documentation for models and agent components worked on.
· Escalates data risks, quality issues, or unclear requirements promptly.
Required Qualifications (Must-Have)
· 0–2 years of experience in analytics, data, software, or related roles (including internships or co-op experience).
· Foundational knowledge of SQL and data modeling concepts.
· Exposure to Microsoft Fabric, Power BI, Azure, or Copilot/LLM-based tools through education or hands-on projects.
· Familiarity with Git-based workflows, documentation, and peer review practices.
· Strong learning mindset and ability to follow standards and accept coaching.
Preferred Qualifications (Nice-to-Have)
· ~2 years of experience working with Microsoft Fabric and data modeling concepts (e.g., dimensional modeling, semantic models), gained through professional roles, internships, or equivalent hands-on experience.
· ~1 year of experience supporting or building AI agents or LLM-based solutions (e.g., Copilot, Microsoft Foundry, or similar), including prompt configuration or retrieval/grounding patterns.
· Introductory experience with Python or notebooks for data exploration and diagnostics.
· Exposure to data governance, sensitivity labels, or enterprise analytics environments.
Education & Experience
· Diploma or Degree in Computer Science, Information Management, Analytics, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
· Exposure to analytics or AI solution delivery through coursework, projects, or early-career roles.
