The Agricultural Animal Health Technician 3 works in support of the Office of the Attending Veterinarian and the agricultural animals used as a resource for research and teaching.

For All Campuses

  • Works to support the humane care of agricultural research and teaching animals and ensures regulatory compliance
  • Supports faculty, staff and students with research projects requiring the use of animals: poultry (turkey and chicken), swine, bovine and other laboratory animals
  • Works with research and farm personnel to facilitate and provide training for animal handling and sample collection
  • Maintains records of animal treatments and procedures as required by the regulations for review by the OAV, USDA, AAALAC International and Ohio State IACUC
  • Reports any issues involving animal care and welfare to the clinical veterinarian
  • Other duties as assigned

For College of Food, Agriculture, and Environmental Sciences (CFAES) Veterinary Support

  • Assists veterinarians with management of the agricultural veterinary clinic
  • Orders veterinary and associated animal supplies for all statewide research and teaching farms, maintain computer records of drug inventories and dispositions in compliance with the regulations and for audits by internal and external agencies as required
  • Cleans and prepares surgical equipment for procedures and projects
  • Interacts with personnel to supply and administer medications under veterinary guidance
  • Assists veterinarians with surgical procedures required for research projects, or for general clinical care
  • Operates sterilization equipment in preparation for surgical procedures in agricultural animals
  • Travels with clinical veterinarians or independently for direct support of on-farm clinical duties, for routine diagnostic sample collections, animal observations, record keeping review
  • and other duties as assigned
  • Runs routine diagnostic tests on blood, milk and fecal samples
  • Completes documentation for regulatory compliance with the Farm SMPs, USDA, AAALAC International, OLAW/ NIH and OSU IACUC
  • Supports animal procurement and updates veterinary SOPs (swine, poultry, rodent, rabbit, guinea pig, ferret) as requested in support of OAV
  • Assists or trains IACUC approved students or personnel to collect samples or perform procedures as required for research and teaching
  • Trains IACUC approved students or personnel in animal handling as requested to support research or teaching
  • Other duties as assigned

All activities are covered by IACUC and AAALAC regulatory guidance. This role maintains documentation of all activities in accordance with regulatory requirements and responds to emergency building alarms as required.

Weekend and holiday rotation may be required with opportunity for overtime pay on these rotations

Required Qualifications

  • Associate's Degree in Animal Science or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Two (2) years of relevant experience.
  • One (1) year of relevant experience working in agricultural animal setting.
  • Excellent organization and communication skills.

Desired Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Biological Science or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 4-6 years of relevant experience.
  • Current AALAS registration or certification. Animal care experience and agricultural species handling experience (swine, poultry, ruminant) highly desirable.

Salary

This job opportunity is a technical-level position. The minimum starting rate may be $22.00 and will depend on the candidate's education and experience, while being balanced with internal equity and the unit's available budget.
