Job Description

As a Labor and Delivery Nurse, you will play a crucial role in providing compassionate and expert care to expectant mothers before, during, and after childbirth. Working in a fast-paced and dynamic environment, you will collaborate closely with obstetricians, midwives, and other healthcare professionals to ensure the safety and well-being of both mother and baby. Your responsibilities will include monitoring maternal and fetal well-being, assisting with labor and delivery procedures, providing emotional support to laboring mothers and their families, and educating new parents on newborn care. Circulating and recovering the cesarean section patient is also required in this role.

All staff within the department will complete training during orientation for the postpartum unit. Staffing for the postpartum unit is comprised of Labor & Delivery, and NICU / Nursery staff. By doing this, it offers the unit versatility and flexibility in the staffing pool

JOB REQUIREMENTS

Minimum Education

  • Graduate of an accredited school of professional nursing.
  • Licensed as Registered Nurse in the state of KY.

·Certification in Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) within the first year of employment.

·Completion of Fetal Monitoring Course within the first year of employment.

Minimum Work Experience

·Previous experience in Labor and Delivery setting preferred but not required.

Required Licenses

  • [Kentucky, United States] Registered Nurses
  • Current Kentucky RN license.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Prenatal Care:

·Assess maternal health and fetal well-being during hospital stay.

·Educate expectant mothers and their families on prenatal care, childbirth preparation, and breastfeeding techniques.

Labor and Delivery Care:

·Monitor maternal vital signs, fetal heart rate, and uterine contractions during labor.

·Assist with labor induction and augmentation procedures as needed.

·Provide pain management support, including administering medications and coordinating with anesthesia providers for epidurals.

·Offer emotional support and encouragement to laboring mothers, helping them cope with pain and anxiety.

Delivery Assistance:

·Assist obstetricians and midwives during vaginal deliveries and cesarean sections.

·Monitor maternal and fetal status closely during the delivery process, recognizing and responding promptly to any complications or emergencies.

Postpartum Care:

·Monitor maternal vital signs and assess for signs of postpartum complications.

·Provide breastfeeding assistance and newborn care education to new mothers.

·Offer emotional support and guidance to new parents as they adjust to their roles.

Documentation and Communication:

·Maintain accurate and detailed medical records of labor and delivery events, maternal assessments, and newborn care.

·Communicate effectively with other members of the healthcare team, including obstetricians, neonatologists, and pediatricians.

·Provide thorough handoff reports to oncoming nursing staff to ensure continuity of care.

Additional Requirements:

·Floating and cross training for the postpartum unit will occur during orientation.
