Summary:
The YMCA focuses on strengthening communities through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. Actively participate in activities/games with children, effectively monitor behavior using appropriate discipline techniques, and develop age-appropriate skills. Depending on experience and ability, some Junior Afterschool Counselors will be asked to lead and manage a group of children under the shared supervision of an Afterschool Counselor.
This part-time opportunity requires you to be available 3-5 days per week between 2:30 and 6:00 p.m. on school days. We offer a flexible schedule that allows you to balance work with other activities. The Junior Afterschool Counselor will provide a positive role model to youth & teens within the philosophy of YMCA standards and expectations, emphasizing youth development and healthy living.
Schools: Bluff Park, Brock's Gap, Deer Valley, Green Valley, Greystone, Gwin, Riverchase, Rocky Ridge, Shades Mountain, South Shades Crest and Trace Crossings.
Essential Functions:
- Supervise the children at all times, with first priority in their safety, following risk management policies.
- Participate and encourage the participation of all students in daily activities and events.
- Attend staff meetings, mandatory training, and other YMCA events such as in-service, parent nights, and special events as required by the program.
- Responsible for the care of all facilities, equipment, and supplies.
- Provide opportunities for youth development as defined by the YMCA of Greater Birmingham and in areas of leadership and core values of honesty, caring, respect, and responsibility.
- Communicate with co-workers and supervisors about incidents involving children’s behavior, actions, or other concerns.
- Follow YMCA policies and procedures.
- Prepare and maintain necessary supplies.
- Arrive to work on time, as scheduled, dressed appropriately & ready to work.
- Other duties and responsibilities assigned by the supervisor.
- Employees and volunteers who directly supervise children and teens will:
• Adhere to policies related to boundaries with children and teens
• Attend required abuse risk management training annually
• Adhere to procedures for managing high-risk activities and supervising children and teens.
• Report suspicious or inappropriate behaviors and policy violations.
• Follow mandated abuse reporting requirements.
QualificationsMinimum Requirements:
- Must be at least 16years old
- Successful completion of background and Child Abuse & Neglect screening
- CPR/First Aid Certification (training provided if needed)
- 3-5 days of afternoon availability, from 2:30pm-6pm
- Willing to have FUN and PLAY at work
- Attend regular in-service training
- Adhere to YMCA standards of service
- Complete all required online training
