What you'll do:

LEARN’s KidsPlay Program provides an organized gender-specific athletic league for boys and girls in grades 3-8 during their participation in LEARN’s TK-8 After School Expanded Learning Programs. The KidsPlay program emphasizes skill-building, developing healthy habits, and building confidence through team sports.

During all time periods when a Youth Leader - KidsPlay Coach is not scheduled to facilitate KidsPlay practices or games, they will be assigned to work as a Youth Leader at their assigned site. All Youth Leaders work directly with an assigned group of approximately 20 students in academic, enrichment, and/or physical fitness activities. All Youth Leaders ensure the safety of the students while following a prescribed program plan, which may occur before school, after school, and occasionally on weekends.

A Youth Leader - KidsPlay Coach will work in a fast-paced environment, and should be energetic while having the physical ability to be on their feet for long periods of time (standing, walking, and even running during sporting events). Youth Leader - KidsPlay Coaches will teach relevant skills, tactics, and strategic techniques to students in order to reach team goals and individual milestones within specific sports offered by the program. The position entails monitoring and enhancing performance by providing developmental skill building, encouragement, and constructive feedback to a group of youth.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES FOR ALL YOUTH LEADER ROLES:

  • Ensures the supervision and safety of assigned students at all times during program hours;
  • Leads and engages a group of assigned students in academic, physical activity, and/or enrichment learning activities that are active, collaborative, meaningful, and support mastery;
  • Provides instruction in academic and/or enrichment activities using curricular resources, lesson plans and materials provided by LEARN;
  • Provides small-group tutoring and/or homework assistance;
  • Serves as a positive adult role model for children in the program through appropriate dress, speech, and attitude;
  • Arrives punctually to meet responsibilities on site;
  • Assists in set up, break down, and ongoing maintenance to keep the program site clean and organized;
  • Promotes positive interactions between students, in accordance with student safety guidelines and procedures;
  • Communicates student needs to Coordinator, teachers, school administration, and parents as appropriate;
  • Ensures program policies, procedures, and requirements are met daily;
  • Maintains accurate program records, including student attendance, behavior, and activity logs;
  • Attends staff meetings and training sessions as required;
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES RELATED TO KIDSPLAY COACHING:

  • Ensures the supervision and safety of assigned students at all times during program hours;
  • Evaluates student-athlete performance and provide suitable feedback, balancing constructive criticism with positivity and motivation;
  • Assesses strengths and weaknesses in a participant's performance and identify areas for further development;
  • Adapts to the needs and interests of the group or individual participant;
  • Facilitates successful practices using one’s knowledge and understanding of the current sport;
  • Demonstrates an activity or skill by breaking the task down into a sequence of steps;
  • Encourages participants to gain and develop skills, knowledge, and techniques;
  • Ensures that participants train and perform to a high standard of health and safety at all times;
  • Inspires confidence and self-esteem through motivation and skill building;

Qualifications:

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

Graduation from High School and a passing score on the district examination for Instructional Assistants.

  • A minimum of two years of college coursework (equivalent to 60 units) is strongly preferred.
  • Must have experience participating as a player in any competitive sport league(s).
  • Prior experience coaching sports is highly desired.
  • Experience working with youth in an educational setting is strongly desired.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Interest in working with, mentoring, and/or tutoring at-risk youth.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students, parents, peers, school staff, and others.
  • Ability to work as part of a team and act as a positive role model for students.
  • Ability to write basic reports summarizing events.

Physical Skills:

  • Must be able to lift and carry small loads (up to 25 lbs.) and stand for prolonged hours.
  • Mobility & Stamina: the role requires frequent standing, walking, bending, stooping, kneeling, pushing, pulling and running while facilitating athletic activities.

LANGUAGE & COMPUTER SKILLS

The ability to speak Spanish Mandarin, Cantonese and Vietnamese is desired at many of our school sites

PHYSICAL SKILLS

  • Must be able to lift and carry small loads (up to 25 lbs.) and stand for prolonged hours.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Must complete Live Scan and obtain Department of Justice and FBI
  • Criminal Background Clearances, as well as Health Clearance (TB Test)
  • Must be willing to work some evenings
  • Must be willing and able to travel anywhere in the region LEARN serves for a job assignment, off-site meetings, trainings, and events.
  • Must be eligible to accept all KidsPlay Coach job assignments.

Condition of Employment & Benefits:

This is a Part-Time Casual, non-benefited, non-exempt, hourly position. This position requires the candidate to be available to work five days per week, Monday through Friday, during program hours, which is primarily after school and

occasionally on weekends. Hours of work will vary, but will not exceed 29 hours per week; specific times and schedules vary, depending upon the school and the needs of the program.

The work calendar for Youth Leaders and all other part-time casual field staff aligns with the academic calendars of our partner school districts. The job has recess breaks during fall, winter, spring and summer. The job resumes after every break and staff are expected to return to work on the date requested by LEARN.
