The Andover Recreation Division’s Kid Care Program provides a safe, fun, and engaging after-school experience for children in Kindergarten through Grade 5 through games, activities, homework support, outdoor play, and enrichment opportunities. Group Leaders supervise and engage children, promote positive behavior, support daily activities, and help create a welcoming environment where every child can learn, grow, and have fun.

The program operates at all five Andover elementary schools. We’ll do our best to place staff at a preferred location, based on program needs and availability. This is an ideal opportunity for anyone interested in education, sports and recreation, or childcare, as well as those looking to develop their supervisory, management, and program-planning skills.


Work Schedule

  • Hours available Monday through Friday, with shifts generally available between 3:00/3:30 and 5:30/6:00 p.m.
  • The program operates five days per week, with the flexibility to work the number of days that fits your schedule.
  • Additional hours may be available during school vacations and the summer.

Compensation: Starting at $18.25 per hour, with the final rate determined based on qualifications and experience.

Examples of duties

  • Supervise and actively engage elementary-aged children in a safe, supportive, and inclusive environment.

  • Plan and lead age-appropriate games, crafts, recreational activities, and enrichment opportunities.

  • Support homework time, snack time, outdoor play, and other components of the daily program.

  • Promote positive behavior and help children develop respectful relationships with their peers and staff.

  • Monitor participants and maintain awareness of their safety and well-being throughout the program.

  • Help prepare, organize, and clean program spaces, equipment, and activity materials.

  • Communicate professionally and respectfully with children, families, coworkers, and supervisors.

  • Follow all program policies, procedures, and emergency protocols.

  • Participate in required trainings and staff meetings.

  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Meet and maintain all applicable Massachusetts childcare licensing requirements for a Group Leader. Candidates must:

    • Be at least 18 years old; and

    • Meet at least one of the following education and experience requirements:

      • Hold a bachelor's or associate degree and have at least three months of experience working with school-age children;

      • Hold a high school diploma or equivalent and have at least six months of experience working with school-age children, including three months of supervised experience in a school-age childcare program; or

      • Have at least nine months of experience working with school-age children, including three months of supervised experience in a school-age childcare program.

  • Additional experience working with children through employment, volunteering, coaching, tutoring, babysitting, camps, or similar activities is preferred.
  • Dependable, responsible, and able to work effectively as part of a team.

  • Ability to communicate positively and appropriately with children, families, and coworkers.

  • CPR and First Aid certification preferred, or willingness and ability to obtain certification if required.

  • Must successfully complete all applicable pre-employment requirements.

Supplemental information

The essential functions of this position require the ability to:

  • Remain active and move throughout the program area for extended periods.

  • Participate in and supervise indoor and outdoor activities in varying weather conditions.

  • Bend, reach, and move between activity areas while supervising children.

  • Occasionally lift and carry program supplies, materials, and equipment weighing up to 25 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Observe children and respond promptly to safety concerns and emergency situations.

  • Communicate clearly and effectively with children, families, and staff.
