Summary

Assist in providing a safe, structured, and engaging environment for school-age children in the City’s After Care program. Support daily program operations by supervising participants, assisting with activities, managing snacks, maintaining a clean environment, and ensuring compliance with program policies and procedures. Work is performed under the Recreation Manager or designated program lead.

Regular schedule is between 2:30 and 6:00 p.m. on weekdays; may work additional hours for training, preparation, or other program needs.

Examples of duties

  • Assists with the daily operation, preparation, set-up, and closing of the After Care program and assigned facility areas.
  • Supervises children and maintains a safe, caring, and positive, environment while adhering to required staff-to-child ratios and program procedures.
  • Assists with participant check-in, attendance, authorized dismissal, transitions, and daily routines.
  • Leads and supports age-appropriate recreational, educational, enrichment, homework, craft, game, and other program activities.
  • Promotes positive behavior, social development, cooperation, respect, and responsibility using established behavior management practices.
  • Prepares and distributes snacks and provides basic assistance to participants while following applicable health, safety, sanitation, allergy, and personal-care procedures.
  • Responds appropriately to injuries, illness, emergencies, behavioral concerns, and safety issues; administers First Aid/CPR/AED within the scope of certification and reports incidents as required.
  • Maintains clean, organized, and safe program areas; monitors equipment, supplies, and inventory and reports deficiencies or maintenance needs.
  • Communicates effectively with participants, families, coworkers, and the public; maintains confidentiality and provides quality customer service.
  • Participates in required meetings, training, professional development, marketing, outreach, and other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Knowledge of basic principles and practices related to child care, youth development and recreation programming.
  • Knowledge of age-appropriate recreational, educational and enrichment activities and behavior management techniques for school-age children.
  • Knowledge of basic health, safety and sanitation practices.
  • Knowledge of basic office equipment, computers and program registration systems.
  • Ability to supervise children in a safe, supportive, and engaging environment.
  • Ability to respond appropriately to emergencies and administer First Aid/CPR/AED.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records and follow policies and procedures.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Ability to work assigned weekday afternoon/evening schedule.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with children, parents, guardians, coworkers and the public.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions, policies and procedures.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information.

Supplemental information

Education and Experience:

  • High School Diploma from an accredited high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma is required.
  • One (1) year of experience working with children in a recreation, child care, education, camp, youth development or related setting is preferred.
  • Associate's degree or higher in Early Childhood Education, Education, Recreation, Human Services or a related field is preferred.

A comparable amount of relevant training, education and/or experience may be substituted for the above qualifications.

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Possession of or ability to obtain a valid Florida driver's license by date of hire.
  • Possession of or ability to obtain Adult, Child and Infant First Aid/CPR/AED certification through the American Heart Association, American Red Cross or another City-approved provider within the required timeframe.
